A Home for Students Built on Leftover Land

At the far edge of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University campus—where the noise of a city expressway collides sharply with the calm of a lakeside grove—a new building has taken shape. Designed by TJAD's Zeng Qun Architecture Design Studio, the Student Service Center occupies a site that was never part of the university's original master plan. The land was secured opportunistically, resulting in a long, narrow plot running north to south.

The Paradox of the Periphery: Constraints as Potential

The site's conditions were demanding. To the west, the campus boundary presses close against a busy urban expressway. To the east, a scenic lake bordered by lush, water-adjacent vegetation provides a striking natural backdrop. Unlike the orderly, ample plots reserved for academic and research facilities, this site carried an inherent quality of being 'at the edge.'

The design team chose to treat this marginality not as a flaw to overcome, but as the starting point for the design. The central question became: what spatial potential could be unlocked at the intersection of noise and scenery, city and nature, inside and outside the campus?

A New Building Type Born from a Student-Centered Philosophy

The student service center has emerged as a rapidly growing new building type on university campuses. As 'student-centeredness' becomes a core principle of higher education philosophy, the need for integrated hubs that combine administrative, welfare, and community functions has grown accordingly. Major Chinese universities have been actively incorporating this typology into campus renovations since the 2010s.

Unlike traditional administrative buildings or student unions, the student service center is not simply a space for handling paperwork. It functions as a complex living hub where students study, rest, gather, and seek counseling. In this sense, the site selection itself carries an irony: a building designed for students placed on the most marginalized piece of land on campus.

How Architecture Negotiates the Edge

In architectural theory, 'edge sites' have long been treated as challenging design conditions. Since Rem Koolhaas articulated the potential of urban peripheries in his concept of the 'Generic City,' reimagining boundary spaces as centers of new energy has become a key current in contemporary architecture.

A similar shift is underway in East Asian university campus design. Where once it was standard to place symbolic buildings at the campus center, there is growing interest in creatively activating edge and residual spaces—treating the entire campus as one organic ecosystem. The SJTU project sits squarely within that movement.
