A Man Whose Home Became a Hospital

Jaafar Annan has been camped on the sidewalk outside the emergency room of Rafik Hariri University Hospital for days. His family's building in Kayfoun, a town in the Mount Lebanon governorate, was leveled by an Israeli airstrike.

"I buried my father," he said. "But my mother is still missing."

To find his 56-year-old mother Fatima, Annan walks through hospitals across the region every day — scanning injured faces, searching morgues for a mole, a scar, any mark. Then he returns to wait for the results of his blood sample, hoping for a DNA match to an unidentified body.

"The hospital has become my home," he said, exhausted.
