'Don't Blame the Toilet'

Artemis 2 mission commander Reid Wiseman stepped up to defend the mission's much-maligned space toilet at a press conference on April 16. "I just want to say, 100% point blank: That was a wonderful toilet," Wiseman said. "The toilet worked great." He was joined by fellow NASA astronauts Victor Glover and Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.

Artemis 2 was the first crewed mission to travel to lunar orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972. The crew launched on April 1, flew around the moon on April 6, and returned to Earth on April 10. Reports of waste-disposal issues aboard the capsule drew widespread media attention.

A Clogged Vent Line, Not a Broken Toilet

Wiseman clarified that the toilet itself functioned properly — it was the vent line that caused problems. The toilet aboard the Orion capsule, named Integrity, is a compact version of the unit used on the International Space Station (ISS). Urine is routed from the toilet through a vent line to the capsule's hull, then expelled into space.

"It's just like a billion little tiny flecks of ice heading out into deep space," Wiseman said of the view. However, the clogged vent line limited this process, reducing the toilet's effective capacity to under 10 urination events. Solid waste was retained onboard until landing, not vented into space.

Chemical Reaction Under Investigation

NASA initially suspected ice had blocked the vent nozzle. Heating the area internally and tilting the capsule toward the sun failed to resolve the issue. Engineers now believe a chemical reaction — possibly involving anti-biofilm agents added to the wastewater — may be the culprit.

NASA teams are currently examining Integrity in detail. Results are expected once the analysis is complete.

Wiseman praised the engineering team behind the toilet: "Those great engineers that made that toilet, I don't want them hanging their head low. They should hang it very high. It was a great piece of gear."

Small System, Big Implications

Space hygiene systems are a critical — if unglamorous — component of long-duration human spaceflight. The Artemis toilet represents the next generation of compact waste-management technology designed for deep-space missions. Findings from the vent line investigation are expected to inform life support system design for future lunar surface stays and beyond.
