'The most special thing that will ever happen in my life': Artemis 2 astronauts describe their epic moon mission
Summary
  • Artemis 2 crew completed a 10-day lunar flyby, the first crewed moon mission in over 50 years.
  • The mission broke the record for the farthest distance any human has traveled from Earth.
  • Crew members described the experience as the most profound moment of their lives.

First Human Lunar Mission in Half a Century

NASA's Artemis 2 crew has safely returned to Earth after a 10-day mission around the moon. Astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen splashed down off the coast of San Diego on April 10, before flying home to Houston's Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base the following day aboard a C-130 Hercules aircraft.

The mission marked humanity's first crewed lunar journey since Apollo 17 in 1972. Flying aboard NASA's Orion spacecraft, the crew completed a dramatic flyby of the far side of the moon, breaking the record for the farthest any human has traveled from Earth.

Why This Mission Matters

Artemis 2 was far more than a technical rehearsal. By flying a free-return trajectory around the moon with an actual crew, NASA has crossed the most critical milestone in its Artemis program, which aims for long-duration lunar surface operations in the 2030s. Glover became the first Black astronaut to fly a lunar mission, while Koch became the first woman to orbit the moon — each writing themselves permanently into the history of human spaceflight.

Live footage and imagery shared by the crew during the mission reached audiences worldwide. The image of a tiny Earth suspended against a vast blackness proved especially haunting for millions of viewers.

The Crew Speaks

At a welcome ceremony in Houston, commander Wiseman called the mission "the most special thing that will ever happen in my life," adding that the experience of being over 320,000 kilometers from home made him feel more deeply human than ever before.

Glover offered brief but powerful words: "I have not processed what we just did, and I'm afraid to even start trying." Koch reflected on seeing Earth as "a lifeboat hanging undisturbingly in the universe" and closed with a message to all of humanity: "Planet Earth, you are a crew." Hansen broke the emotional tension with humor, joking that his crewmates' heartfelt remarks were almost too much to handle.

The Road Ahead

The success of Artemis 2 paves the way for Artemis 3, which aims to land astronauts near the lunar south pole. That mission is planned to use SpaceX's Starship lunar lander in a docking profile with Orion. While schedule and budget uncertainties remain, the flawless performance of Artemis 2 has significantly boosted confidence in NASA's return-to-the-moon roadmap.
