Summary
  • NOVA's 'Return to the Moon' documentary aired April 15, revealing Artemis 2's behind-the-scenes story.
  • The Orion capsule's heat shield damage from Artemis 1 emerges as a central engineering drama.
  • Director Lambert sees the goal of a lunar base as inspiring, but notes its realization remains uncertain.

A Week After Splashdown, the Camera Rolls Back

Just one week after NASA's Artemis 2 crew safely returned to Earth via Pacific Ocean splashdown, PBS's NOVA aired a one-hour documentary pulling back the curtain on the historic mission. 'Return to the Moon,' directed by British filmmaker Tim Lambert, premiered April 15 on PBS stations nationwide.

From Rocket Assembly to Heat Shield Failures

The documentary tracks the design and manufacture of NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket in granular detail, and dives deep into the heat shield damage discovered after the uncrewed Artemis 1 mission in 2022. Lambert cited the NASA Inspector General's report from May 2024 as a turning point in production: 'No one really had any sense of how serious the capsule issue was and how bad the damage was.' The double-dip skip-entry reentry maneuver used on Artemis 1 was ultimately abandoned as a result.

Engineers, Not Astronauts, Are the Real Story

Lambert initially planned to center the film on astronauts and the historic milestone of the first woman and person of color on the moon. Production shifted toward engineering. 'The astronauts are the rock stars, but the real question marks about Artemis architecture are all connected to engineering. That's what slowed the whole process up,' he said.

An Apollo Kid Looks at a New Era

Lambert, who was roused from bed as a child in England to watch Apollo 11 land on the moon in 1969, sees Artemis as the dawn of a new age of inspiration—while remaining measured about whether its ambitions will be fully realized.
