Bitcoin Stalls at $76,000 Sell Wall

Bitcoin (BTC) is locked in a three-day standoff at the $76,000 resistance level. As of April 17, BTC is trading around $75,440, with approximately $450 million in sell orders stacked between $75,900 and $76,300, according to CoinGlass data.

The sell wall reflects two distinct trader cohorts: those attempting to short the range high in anticipation of a pullback toward $68,000, and those with liquidation exposure above current prices placing defensive orders. Bullish traders are steadily absorbing this supply in an attempt to force a breakout.

Derivatives Signals: Squeeze Dynamics Building

Futures market activity has heated up noticeably. BTC briefly topped $76,000 during European trading hours. Total crypto market volume rose 28% to $225.8 billion, while open interest (OI) edged up 1.5% to $126.68 billion.

The standout figure is liquidations — total liquidations surged 140% to $529 million, with short positions slightly exceeding longs. This pattern is consistent with mild short-squeeze dynamics, suggesting upward pressure is gradually building.

Volatility indicators point in a supportive direction. BTC's 30-day implied volatility index (BVIV) fell to a 2.5-month low of 43.35%, and Ethereum's EVIV hovers near recent lows around 65%. Falling volatility typically supports continued trending behavior. However, put option bias on Deribit for both BTC and ETH indicates that downside hedging remains elevated.

Altcoin Market: Selective Strength Amid Broad Caution

Altcoins broadly lagged bitcoin as traders awaited directional confirmation. The BTC-heavy CoinDesk 5 (CD5) index gained 0.8% since midnight UTC, while the altcoin-dominant CoinDesk 100 (CD100) dipped into the red. The CoinDesk Memecoin Index (CDMEME) underperformed, losing 2.8%.

The Altcoin Season indicator sits at 37/100, a neutral reading following 53/100 last month and 19/100 in February.

Select tokens outperformed. Solana (SOL) saw futures OI jump 11% in 24 hours to 5.53 billion SOL — the highest since March 18 — driven by bullish positioning signals. Cardano (ADA) leads on OI-adjusted CVD, pointing to strong buyer dominance. Dogecoin (DOGE) OI hovers at a six-month high of 14.17 billion DOGE, though slightly negative funding rates suggest mixed sentiment. KAS (+3.9%), PENDLE (+3.5%), and AERO (+2.5%) also outperformed the broader market.

Macro Context: Iran Ceasefire Lifts Equities

U.S. equities surged to record highs after a ceasefire in Lebanon signaled the Iran conflict may be winding down. Crypto, which had outperformed equities during the war period, is now ceding relative ground. The market appears positioned for further gains but is not yet ready to shift into full bull mode.
