Bitcoin's First Decisive Breakout Since February Selloff

Bitcoin (BTC) has broken decisively above $77,000 for the first time since its sharp selloff on February 5, when it plunged to a low near $60,000. The move carries significant technical weight as BTC now trades firmly above its 100-day moving average (100DMA) of $74,774.

The breakout also puts Strategy (MSTR), the largest publicly traded holder of bitcoin, back in profit on its holdings. The company's average purchase price stands at $75,577, meaning current prices have pushed the position back into unrealized gains territory.

Why This Breakout Matters

What makes this move particularly notable is the context in which it occurred. Bitcoin tested and failed at this resistance zone twice before — briefly touching $76,700 on February 4 before collapsing further, and stalling at $76,013 during a recovery attempt on March 17. The current sustained break above $76,300 is the third test of this zone, and so far the most convincing.

MSTR shares surged approximately 8% on the day and reclaimed their 200-week moving average, a long-term trend indicator that smooths price data over roughly four years. This is the first time Strategy has traded above that level since February.

A 25% Rally from the February Lows

Bitcoin has now rallied more than 25% from its early February bottom. Beyond the headline figure, the structure of the rally matters: former resistance at the $76,300–$77,000 zone is now expected to transition into support, a classic technical pattern that could attract additional algorithmic buying.

Geopolitical tailwinds have also played a role. Iran's foreign minister declared the Strait of Hormuz would remain fully open, prompting a roughly 10% plunge in oil prices and a risk-on shift across markets that benefited bitcoin.

Market observers suggest the probability of this breakout leading to sustained upside has increased, though macro volatility remains a key risk. Some bitcoin bulls are now targeting $125,000 as the next major level.

For Strategy, the return to profitability on its bitcoin holdings is meaningful, but further accumulation will likely depend on market liquidity conditions and shareholder processes. The recapture of both the 100DMA and the 200-week moving average is a constructive signal — though monitoring for short-term overheating indicators remains prudent.
