Brazilian University Hosts Academic Conference on Transcontinental Highway
UNIGRAN University presents 259 research projects centered on 'Bioceanic Route'

- •Brazil's UNIGRAN University hosted an academic conference featuring 259 research projects on the Bioceanic Highway connecting four South American countries.
- •Studies analyzing the economic and social impact of this infrastructure project were submitted from diverse fields including agriculture, health, and law.
- •The highway, scheduled for completion in 2026, is expected to reduce Asia-South America logistics time from 15 days to 5 days, significantly enhancing export competitiveness in Brazil's central-western region.
A New Axis for Sustainable Development
UNIGRAN University in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, hosted a large-scale academic event focusing on the Bioceanic Route (Rota Bioceânica), a highway crossing the South American continent.
On October 24, the 14th Research Salon featured 259 research projects under the theme "Bioceanic Route: Sustainable Connections in Health, Technology, and Society." The event was held in conjunction with the 17th Undergraduate Research Conference and the 12th Graduate Exhibition.
The Bioceanic Route is a 2,400km international highway connecting Brazil's interior to Chilean Pacific ports, traversing four countries: Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, and Chile. This route is expected to reduce Asia-South America logistics time from 15 days to 5 days, compared to the traditional Panama Canal route.
Interdisciplinary Research
The hallmark of this event was cross-disciplinary research. Studies analyzing the route's regional impact were submitted from diverse fields including logistics, agriculture, health, environment, law, and social policy.
Renato de Souza Coutinho, an 8th-semester agronomy student, won an award for his research on "Effects of Bacillus aryabhattai Biological Agent on Soybean Cultivation by Soil Management." The study aimed to mitigate drought stress, exploring ways to improve agricultural productivity in the era of climate change.
Maria Aparecida de Souza Rodrigues, a 2nd-semester law student, gained her first academic conference experience with the topic "The Meaning of Voting in Brazil: Democratic Act or Civic Duty?"
New Possibilities for Regional Economy
In the opening lecture, sustainable finance expert Carolini Dionizio Vivaldi highlighted the economic and environmental opportunities the Bioceanic Route will bring.
"This project requires a strategic perspective on public policy, infrastructure, environment, foreign trade, and social integration," she said, emphasizing academia's role.
Gabrieli Pagliusi Pais de Lima, Chair of UNIGRAN's Research Ethics Committee, stated, "We wanted more people to know about Mato Grosso do Sul's potential and sustainable development," adding, "I'm confident that seeds of knowledge have been planted in all participants."
A Festival for Students and Families
The research director described the event as "the rebirth of the Research Salon." A distinctive feature was encouraging students to invite family and friends to observe their presentations.
"The proud expressions of parents, the encouragement from peers, and groups rehearsing until the last moment demonstrated our students' dedication and the value they place on research," he added.
The three-day event is being recognized as a case study demonstrating how academic research can connect with local communities.
Future Outlook [AI Analysis]
The Bioceanic Route project targets completion in 2026. Once this highway opens, the export competitiveness of Brazil's central-western region is likely to improve significantly.
Particularly, Mato Grosso do Sul is Brazil's largest soybean producer, and improved access to Asian markets is expected by industry experts to increase agricultural exports by over 30%.
This academic conference presented a perspective viewing infrastructure projects not merely as civil engineering undertakings but as comprehensive opportunities for regional development. Multifaceted research is expected to continue in areas such as environmental impact assessment, indigenous community protection, and logistics efficiency.
