Fiancée Dies During Birthday Trip

Joe McCann, founder of crypto hedge fund Asymmetric, is under investigation by Tanzanian authorities following the suspicious death of his fiancée, U.S. influencer Ashly Robinson, 31. According to multiple reports, Robinson was found unresponsive on April 9 at the private villa of luxury resort Zuri Zanzibar, where the couple had been celebrating her birthday and recent engagement. She was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police Rule Suicide; Family Unconvinced

Zanzibar police confirmed the couple had a heated dispute that evening, with hotel staff intervening twice and separating them into different rooms. Authorities ruled the death a suicide stemming from a 'misunderstanding,' but the investigation remains open. McCann's passport has been confiscated and he has been asked to remain in Tanzania pending forensic results from the autopsy.

Robinson's family has publicly disputed the suicide ruling and launched a GoFundMe campaign, surpassing their $50,000 goal. The resort stated it is cooperating fully with local authorities and the U.S. Embassy. The U.S. State Department offered condolences but declined further comment.

Prominent Crypto Figure, Fresh Off Fund Collapse

McCann is a well-known figure in institutional crypto. Asymmetric, his hedge fund and venture firm, counts Andreessen Horowitz co-founders Marc Andreessen and Chris Dixon among its backers. His estimated net worth stands at approximately $45 million.

The incident comes shortly after McCann announced in December the wind-down of Asymmetric's Liquid Alpha Fund, following unconfirmed reports on social media that the fund was down 78% in 2025.
