Dark Shadow on New Year's Day
The Czech Republic welcomed 2026, but several tragic accidents occurred during the New Year's Eve celebrations.
In Jihlava, a car skidded and struck four pedestrians. The vehicle reportedly lost control on the road surface and crashed onto the sidewalk, though fortunately all four sustained only minor injuries.
One Death from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
A more tragic incident occurred in Kravaře, Opava District. A 36-year-old man died from carbon monoxide poisoning, and a 41-year-old woman and two school-age children also showed symptoms of poisoning.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless toxic gas that can accumulate when heating devices or generators are used with insufficient ventilation. Particular caution is required in enclosed spaces during winter.
Traffic Chaos Worsened by Heavy Snowfall
Heavy snowfall across the Czech Republic on New Year's Eve further deteriorated traffic conditions. Bus operations were delayed and several additional accidents were reported, with up to 15cm of snow accumulation expected in northern mountain regions.
The meteorological service forecast that snowfall would continue on New Year's Day.
New Fireworks Regulations Take Effect
Starting this year, new fireworks regulations came into effect in the Czech Republic. A mandatory 250-meter safety distance from specific facilities must be maintained, resulting in the cancellation of traditional large-scale fireworks displays.
Meanwhile, in Sydney, a moment of silence was held before New Year's celebrations to commemorate the 15 victims of the terrorist attack on December 14.
Eva Pavlová, wife of the Czech President, delivered a New Year's message expressing hope that "2026 brings health, peace, greater understanding, and courage."
