Dallas Art Fair Finds Steady Footing After Pandemic Disruptions

The Dallas Art Fair wrapped another edition with roughly 90 participating galleries, marking its most stable exhibitor lineup since the pandemic years. According to industry reports, only around 31 galleries did not return this year, down from more than 40 in previous cycles.

Fair director Kelly Cornell noted during the VIP preview that the high return rate reflects strong dealer confidence in the Dallas market. "We have a great return rate and strong desire from others to get in," she said. "We think it's due to the market and that they're able to place work here."

Slow but Deliberate: The Texas Collector Culture

Dallas collectors are known for being tight-knit and deliberate—often acquiring just one or two works per year, but timing those purchases to coincide with the fair. Dealers reported solid interest during the preview but few immediate sales, as transactions in Dallas tend to unfold over multiple visits, sometimes closing only on the final day (April 19).

Museum Acquisitions and Top Sales

The Dallas Museum of Art acquired six works for its permanent collection through the Dallas Art Fair Foundation and its own acquisition fund, spending a combined $100,000. Artists acquired include Nicole Eisenman, Caroline Monnet, Hasani Sahlehe, Gloria Klein, and Raymond Saunders.

New York's Hollis Taggart led in highest-priced sales, placing Sam Francis's Untitled (Blue, Green, Red) (1964) for $140,000 and Corinne Michelle West's Red Still Life (1959) for $100,000. Brooklyn's Carvalho gallery reported the highest sales volume, moving seven works by Rachel Mica Weiss for a combined $177,000.

Jody Klotz Fine Art of Abilene, Texas sold Alice Baber's Piper's Message (1962) for $120,000 and a Wolf Kahn pastel for $32,000. Miami's Spinello Projects sold half its booth of Marlon Portales works by Friday afternoon.

A Launchpad for Emerging Dealers

For younger galleries, Dallas offers a foothold in the South. Tessa Granowski of Dallas's Nature of Things presented a solo booth of paintings by Texas-raised artist Carrie Cook, whose quietly tense depictions of everyday objects drew strong interest from local visitors.

"Dallas is a place where you can really build relationships and grow a business," Cornell said.
