Grand Opening

The 8th African Film Festival kicked off on May 21, 2026, at the Busan Cinema Center in Haeundae District, Busan. Co-organized by the Korea-Africa Foundation, the Busan Cinema Center Foundation, and the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province in Jeonju, the festival showcases films that reflect the rich cultural diversity and dynamism of the African continent. The opening ceremony was marked by a vibrant pre-show performance by singer Harem. Using ukulele and electronic keyboard, Harem captivated the audience with a gentle yet powerful vocal delivery. He also shared his efforts to challenge stereotypes about Africa, saying, 'Africa is still widely perceived as a place where many people live in poverty, where animals are abundant, and where it's simply too hot,' earning strong audience resonance.

Universal Messages in African Cinema

Charles Uwagba, director of the Kenyan-Canadian co-production 'Kipkemboi,' took the stage at the opening. The film follows a math prodigy from a rural Kenyan village who uses digital technology to challenge Wall Street. Praised for vividly portraying Kenya’s digital innovation hub known as the 'Silicon Savannah' and the energy of its youth, the film has drawn acclaim. Uwagba said, 'Film is a powerful force that connects people across language, culture, and borders,' expressing deep emotion about presenting his work to Korean audiences.

Diverse Programs and International Collaboration

The 8th African Film Festival will run from May 21 to June 14 across three cities: Busan, Seoul, and Jeonju. A total of 16 films from 15 countries will be screened, spanning genres including drama, thriller, documentary, horror, and romance. The festival will feature audience engagement programs such as 'Audience & Director Talks' (GV) and 'Talk Concerts' led by film experts. Kenyan Ambassador to South Korea, Emi Zerono Kipsoi, and Kim Young-chae, Chairperson of the Korea-Africa Foundation, attended the opening and participated in a commemorative photo session.

Significance of Cultural Exchange

In his opening address, Kim Young-chae, Chairperson of the Korea-Africa Foundation, said, 'While African films may not yet reach the same technical quality as global standards, the emotions of love, struggle, and human connection are universally similar.' He expressed hope that the festival would become a deeper bridge for understanding and dialogue with Africa. Park Gwon-beom, President of the Busan Cinema Center, emphasized, 'Africa is not a distant, unfamiliar continent, but a close cultural neighbor with whom we share the same breath.' Ambassador Kipsoi further highlighted the film 'Kipkemboi,' stating it symbolizes not just an individual story, but the resilience of Kenyan youth and, by extension, youth across the African continent.
