Explosive Misinformation: How Mushroom Clouds, 'Sonic Weapons', and Fake Nuclear Claims Spread During the Iran Strikes
A guide to understanding the wave of explosion misinformation following the US-Israel military campaign against Iran

- •Nuclear weapon claims surged on social media following US-Israel strikes on Iran.
- •Mushroom clouds can form from conventional explosives and do not indicate nuclear detonation.
- •Experts warn that deliberate disinformation frequently misattributes strike responsibility.
Iran Strikes Spark an Explosion of Misinformation
Since the US and Israel launched their military campaign against Iran on February 28, 2026, thousands of bombs have been dropped — and an even greater number of falsehoods have flooded the internet. Videos of explosions have been misattributed to specific weapons, mushroom clouds have been labeled as evidence of nuclear strikes, and the reality of the conflict has been buried beneath layers of misinformation.
A prominent example emerged on March 11 on social media platform X, when a user known as cirnosad shared footage with the caption: "Without additional details, this appears to be a nuclear weapon used on Iran by the US." The post included a radioactive symbol. After this guide was published, the post was set to private.
Dr. N.R. Jenzen-Jones, Director of Armament Research Services (ARES), a weapons intelligence consultancy, told investigative outlet Bellingcat bluntly: "The video does not show a nuclear explosion — something that I am astonished even needs to be clarified."
Mushroom Clouds Are Not Exclusive to Nuclear Weapons
One of the most common explosion-related misconceptions is equating mushroom clouds with nuclear detonations. In reality, mushroom clouds can form from conventional explosives when hot gases rapidly rise and meet resistance from cooler, denser air above.
Defence Research and Development Canada has published footage of non-nuclear explosive tests that produce clearly visible mushroom clouds. Nuclear explosions, by contrast, differ substantially in scale, altitude reached, and the presence of radioactive fallout.
Jenzen-Jones noted that "fuel-air explosive (FAE) and thermobaric munitions are particularly poorly understood by non-specialists," making them frequent targets of misidentification.
Between Ignorance and Intent — The Problem of Deliberate Disinformation
Not all explosion misinformation stems from honest confusion. Joe Dyke, Director of Programmes at conflict monitor Airwars, told Bellingcat that the most common type they encounter is "deliberate disinformation designed to shift responsibility for a strike," typically dressed up in "flimsy but scientific-sounding" analysis.
This disinformation operates in two main directions: attributing attacks to different actors, or portraying legitimate weapons as illegal or mysterious ones to inflame public opinion.
Understanding Explosives — Knowledge as Defense
Explosives are energetic materials that kill and destroy through rapid energy release, sending pressure waves outward from the blast epicenter that can directly harm people and shatter objects into lethal fragments.
Two explosive types are particularly prone to misinformation:
Thermobaric Explosives These detonate in two stages — an initial charge disperses fuel, which then ignites with atmospheric oxygen to create a sustained, wide-area pressure wave. The large blast radius and intense heat are often misread as signs of nuclear or exotic weapons, despite thermobaric munitions being a well-established category of conventional arms.
Dense Inert Metal Explosives (DIME) Designed with tungsten powder to limit blast radius and reduce civilian casualties, DIME weapons are nonetheless controversial due to concerns about metal particles entering the body. Their unusual effects make them a frequent subject of "mystery weapon" claims online.
How to Spot Explosion Misinformation
- Check the source. Is the analysis from a verified weapons research organization, or an anonymous account?
- Be skeptical of scientific language. Technical jargon without verifiable methodology is a hallmark of deliberate disinformation.
- Abandon the mushroom cloud = nuclear equation. Visual resemblance does not prove weapon type.
- Cross-verify attribution claims. Posts identifying the party responsible for a strike require independent corroboration.
What Comes Next [AI Analysis]
As the US-Israel military campaign against Iran continues, explosion misinformation is likely to intensify. Social media algorithms that prioritize emotionally charged content create structural incentives for sharing dramatic footage alongside sensational claims.
In the longer term, public media literacy education and the democratization of OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) methodology are among the most viable countermeasures. Institutions like Bellingcat publishing accessible guides to explosive fundamentals represent one approach. However, the structural asymmetry — where disinformation spreads faster than verification — is unlikely to be resolved in the near term.
Experts emphasize that admitting uncertainty is more responsible than hasty weapons identification. A single frame of explosion footage cannot serve as proof of nuclear warfare, just as no single image can capture the full truth of a conflict.
