Ferrari's First Electric Car 'Luce' Unveiled

Ferrari has unveiled its first fully electric sports car, the 'Luce,' marking a historic milestone in the brand's legacy. The vehicle was first revealed at an event held in Rome, Italy, with the interior and exterior design led by the design studio LoveFrom, founded by Jony Ive and Marc Newson. Luce is a large sports car with a five-passenger cabin, distinguished by a massive curved glass structure (glasshouse) that extends from the front to the rear. This feature incorporates front, side, and rear windows as well as a panoramic glass roof, all wrapped in an aluminum outer skin.

Design Focus: Separating Aerodynamics and Interior Space

The design of Luce was engineered to maximize aerodynamic efficiency. At the front, a single large aerodynamic wing replaces the traditional hood, contributing to a record-low drag coefficient of 0.254—the lowest in Ferrari's history. Marc Newson stated, 'In electric car design, aerodynamics is everything,' emphasizing that the drag coefficient is a critical factor. The glass structure is designed separately from the aluminum body, preserving the purity of the interior space and ensuring the two elements do not interfere with each other. This allows passengers to perceive the interior more freely and naturally.

Performance and Range

Luce is equipped with a 122-kilowatt-hour, 800-volt battery system, enabling a maximum range of 530 kilometers on a single charge. Ferrari emphasized that this figure exceeds 500 kilometers. The powertrain features four motors, delivering a total output of 1,035 horsepower, ensuring high-performance capabilities typical of a supercar. Inside, the atmosphere differs significantly from traditional sports cars. Stevens noted that the vehicle's sound is amplified by the actual vibrations of the rear motors, producing a natural, non-synthetic audio experience. Additionally, the steering wheel is considered the central and most critical element of the project, closely integrated with the console and finished in a high-gloss varnish.

Pricing and Launch Plan

Luce is priced at 550,000 euros in Italy, making it the most expensive Ferrari in the brand's history. Pricing for the U.S. market has not yet been announced. Ferrari has designated Luce as its second four-door model and first five-passenger model, signaling a deliberate expansion beyond traditional sports car boundaries. Following its unveiling in London, Luce will be showcased at major international auto shows around the world in the coming months.
