Two Perspectives Converge

Two distinct modes of engaging with art—curation and filmmaking—have intersected around a single artist. Guggenheim Museum curator Joan Young and documentary filmmaker Amei Wallach joined in conversation about Robert Rauschenberg, each bringing a different language to the same subject.

Their starting points differ fundamentally. A curator places works in space and builds context through selection. A filmmaker follows an artist's life and process with a camera, layering narrative across time. Yet before the complexity of Rauschenberg, both arrive at a strikingly similar question: 'What did this man see?'

Rauschenberg: The Artist Who Erased Boundaries

Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) was one of the most singular figures in American art history. At a time when Abstract Expressionism dominated the art world, he placed newspapers, fabric, found objects, and photographs onto canvas. He called these works 'Combines'—neither painting nor sculpture, but something entirely their own.

Rauschenberg sought to erase the line between art and life. He collaborated with avant-garde peers like John Cage and Merce Cunningham, moving freely between performance, set design, printmaking, and photography. Often called a forerunner of Pop Art, he resisted even that label.

To contain such an artist within a single exhibition catalogue or film was, from the outset, a near-impossible task.

The Language of Curation, the Language of Film

Joan Young has worked extensively with the Guggenheim's Rauschenberg archives and exhibitions. Curation is, at its core, a practice of selection and omission—what to show, what to leave behind. Every choice is an act of interpretation.

Amei Wallach has spent her career capturing artists on film, with documentaries on Louise Bourgeois, Ilya Kabakov, and others. Her camera lingers less on finished works than on the dust of the studio and the movement of an artist's hands.

Their conversation places Rauschenberg at its center, but ultimately circles a more fundamental question: how do we transmit the meaning of art from one generation to the next?

How We Remember Rauschenberg

The Guggenheim has long collected and exhibited Rauschenberg's work. A major retrospective in New York in 1997 surveyed half a century of his output and generated significant critical response. Since then, the Guggenheim has continued to collaborate with the Rauschenberg Foundation on scholarly efforts to document his legacy.

Film records have accumulated alongside institutional ones. Rauschenberg was candid on camera during his lifetime, and a substantial body of interview and documentary material survives. But a gap always exists between a living voice and its posthumous interpretation.

The dialogue between Joan Young and Amei Wallach is an effort to bridge that gap—working from the premise that no single answer exists, and that only when multiple perspectives are layered together does the full shape of Rauschenberg begin to come into focus.
