Cameroon Rises as New Power in the Final

In the final of the 2026 Domestic African Community Football Competition (KAFCON), Cameroon’s national team defeated last year’s champions, South Africa, 1-0 to win the title. The match began at 7:30 p.m. at Poseung Sports Park in Pyeongtaek, and they secured victory by holding on to the goal scored in the first half. Following Cameroon’s goal, fans rushed onto the field waving national flags, creating an atmosphere as intense as that of a World Cup final.

A Cultural Exchange Event to Celebrate Africa Day

KAFCON is the fifth annual cultural exchange event for Africans living in South Korea, held over the weekend ahead of Africa Day on May 25. Africa Day commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963 and serves to reflect on overcoming colonialism and fostering Pan-African solidarity. This year, 16 countries including Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, and South Africa competed in a total of 32 matches, with over 1,300 Africans attending from across the country. The organizers held the first edition in 2022 to promote unity among the 22,000 Africans living here and to spread a positive image of them.

A Pure Football Event Free from Political Interference

To prevent the tournament from turning into a political propaganda stage or a mere show, the organizers skipped the opening ceremony again, just as they did last year. Lee Chi-heon, president of the Korea-Africa Community Football Association, explained, “Those who have traveled great distances at great expense only have kicking the ball as their hope and purpose. We ensured they focused solely on football without wasting time on formal ceremonies.” This measure underscores that the event is more than just a sports competition—it is a meaningful space symbolizing solidarity within the African community.

Feedback from Diplomatic Envoys and Plans for Next Year

Diplomatic envoys from various African countries who attended praised the deep significance football holds for Africans. Drekka, ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Congo to South Korea, said, “Despite different nations, coming together to share joy symbolizes the unity and solidarity of the African community.” Samuel Abilio, ambassador of Angola, added that “when many African countries play football, it goes beyond a game and becomes an opportunity to unite as one,” expressing hope that Angola’s team will participate next year. George Harrison, deputy ambassador of Ghana, stated, “While there are wins and losses in matches, since all Africans came together, every country can be considered a winner. This is an important event that continues the strong ties between South Korea and Africa at the grassroots level.”

Evidence of Civic Awareness and Sustainability

After the tournament ended, over 1,000 participants voluntarily picked up and cleaned up trash around the stadium. This serves as concrete proof that the event is built on mature civic awareness, going beyond a simple festival. Im Heung-se, former head coach of South Sudan’s national football team and vice chairman of South Sudan’s Olympic Committee, said, “I saw the tournament’s immense potential.” He revealed plans to develop KAFCON beyond Pyeongtaek into a major football festival in Gyeonggi Province and across South Korea by next year, involving local governments, the football community, and the National Assembly’s Africa Forum. The event ran from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the sense of unity among Africans through their shared round soccer balls made people look forward even more to next year’s edition.
