Summary
  • Kang Dong-won trained extensively in breakdancing to play the role of idol group Triangle's leader Hyun-woo in 'Wild Thing'.
  • He practiced four hours daily in Los Angeles, mastering advanced moves like headspins and windmills, and even injured his ribs during training.
  • The music video for Triangle's 'Love Is' has reached 2.5 million views, and the film is scheduled for release on June 3, 2024.

Actor Kang Dong-won, who plays the leader Hyun-woo of the idol group Triangle in the film 'Wild Thing,' underwent intense training in Los Angeles, USA, for several months to master breakdancing perfectly.

Before filming, Kang trained for four hours daily with the U.S.-based breakdancing group 'JUiCE.' Initially unfamiliar with hip-hop music and breakdancing, he started with simply walking rhythmically and gradually progressed to advanced moves like headspins and windmills. He even injured his ribs during windmill practice. He went through all these steps to portray Hyun-woo, the leader of Triangle and self-proclaimed 'dance machine.'

Kang was directly involved in music and styling from the early stages of production. He personally proposed the retro 'end-of-century' hairstyle featured in Triangle's second album, which became a highlight that drew laughter from audiences. He said, "I wore a wig as close as possible to the original, and it was so funny—completely satisfying."

'Wild Thing' is a comedy film about the mixed-gender idol group Triangle, which dominated the K-pop scene in the 2000s, reuniting 20 years later for a comeback performance. Directed by Son Jae-gon, the film is set for release on June 3, 2024. Alongside Kang Dong-won, actor Eom Tae-gu plays rapper Sang-gu, and Park Ji-hyun portrays main vocalist Dami, both portraying 2000s idols.

The music video for Triangle's single 'Love Is,' released on the 21st of last month, has already reached 2.5 million views. Kang remarked, "I've been active for a long time, so I recognize most fans' faces, but yesterday I saw many unfamiliar faces—probably people who came after watching the music video. I truly felt the public's growing interest."

Kang described feeling like he was making his debut through this film. "I practiced so much that it felt like a debut. I wanted to show the crew, 'We're ready this far.'" (laughter)

He explained the film's comedic tone, saying, "I love B-movie sensibilities, so I tried to emphasize that aspect. The flashback scenes even carry a B-movie comedy vibe."

Kang recently mentioned he is considering retirement. "Actors don't really retire. You just take roles suitable for your age. It's a natural thought that comes with aging." He continues to work on film production, run a fashion brand, and hopes to expand into furniture and wine making.
