Key Figure Behind $20M Meta-1 Coin Crypto Scam Sentenced to 23 Years

23 Years Behind Bars — 'Unrepentant' Fraudster Faces Justice
A US federal judge has sentenced Robert Dunlap, the trustee of a fraudulent cryptocurrency project, to 23 years in federal prison for orchestrating a scheme that stole approximately $20 million from nearly 1,000 investors. US District Judge LaShonda Hunt in Illinois also ordered Dunlap to pay restitution to his victims.
Prosecutors described Dunlap as "unrepentant" and said his lies "grew over the years." Assistant US attorneys added that would-be criminals "need to know that such actions will be met with a serious repercussion that includes loss of one's liberty for an extended period of time."
Token Claimed to Be Backed by Picasso Art and $44 Billion in Gold
A federal jury convicted Dunlap in November on two counts of mail fraud, each carrying up to 20 years in prison. According to prosecutors, from 2018 to 2023, Dunlap and co-conspirators marketed and sold the Meta-1 Coin through a trust, falsely telling investors the token was backed by a $1 billion art collection including works by Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh, as well as $44 billion in gold.
Dunlap also used automated trading bots to artificially inflate the market price and trading volume of Meta-1 Coin on a website he created called Meta Exchange.
Promised 224,923% Returns — Delivered Nothing
The SEC revealed that defendants promised investors the token was risk-free and could yield returns of up to 224,923%. In reality, the coins were never distributed. Investor funds were instead spent on personal expenses and luxury vehicles, including a Ferrari.
In March 2020, the SEC issued emergency asset freeze orders against Dunlap, alleged accomplice Nicole Bowdler, and former Washington state Senator David Schmidt to halt the scheme.
Crackdown on Crypto Fraud Intensifies
This sentencing is part of a broader regulatory crackdown on crypto-related crimes. In March, a man accused of hacking defunct DeFi platform Uranium Finance was charged with computer fraud and money laundering, signaling that US authorities are tightening their grip on bad actors across the digital asset space.
