A Legendary Scene Completed in Just One Take

Actor Kiefer Sutherland (58) has shared memories of working with the late director Rob Reiner. In the CBS News special 'Rob Reiner — Scenes from a Life,' airing December 21 (local time), Sutherland recounted an iconic scene from the 1992 courtroom drama 'A Few Good Men.'

Sutherland recalled the day Jack Nicholson perfectly delivered the line "You can't handle the truth!" in a single take. "Nobody said a word, and Rob walked over to Jack and whispered, 'Do you want to do one more?' Jack said, 'We're here,'" he shared.

The second take was equally flawless, and Director Reiner, who had planned to shoot all day, sent the crew home early. "Rob looked at everyone and said, 'We can't do any better than this, so let's wrap for the day,'" Sutherland remembered.

The Legacy of a Hollywood Master

Rob Reiner, who passed away at his Brentwood home with his wife Michele on December 14, was one of Hollywood's most celebrated directors. Starting with his 1984 debut 'This Is Spinal Tap,' he created timeless classics including 'Stand by Me' (1986), 'The Princess Bride' (1987), 'When Harry Met Sally' (1989), and 'Misery' (1990).

The CBS special features interviews with Hollywood luminaries including Albert Brooks, Kathy Bates, Annette Bening, Michael Douglas, Jerry O'Connell, and Mandy Patinkin. His wide-ranging network—from comedians to Oscar-winning actors—was the result of building his own name as a director, producer, and actor after entering the entertainment industry as the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner.

Director Reiner and Michele had sons Jake and Nick, and daughter Romy. Their 32-year-old son Nick is currently facing charges for two counts of first-degree murder.
