Latvia Officially Joins the Artemis Accords

NASA has invited media to attend the official signing ceremony of the Artemis Accords by Latvia. With this signing, Latvia joins the growing coalition of nations committed to the peaceful use of outer space, including lunar exploration under the U.S.-led Artemis program.

The Artemis Accords establish a framework for international cooperation in space exploration, covering ten key principles including transparency, interoperability, and the responsible use of space resources.

Why This Matters

Latvia's accession carries significance beyond routine diplomatic formality. The small Baltic nation has no independent launch capability, yet its signing reflects a broader trend of pro-Western European states aligning with the U.S.-led space order.

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, geopolitical realignments have intensified across domains including space. With Russia signaling potential withdrawal from ISS cooperation and China completing its own space station, the United States is leveraging the Artemis Accords to consolidate alliances among like-minded nations.

From 8 Nations in 2020 to Over 40 Today

The Artemis Accords were launched in October 2020 with eight founding signatories — the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Australia, and others. Since then, the coalition has expanded rapidly to include emerging space nations such as the UAE, India, and Brazil.

Over 40 countries have now signed. NASA envisions the Accords not merely as a diplomatic instrument but as the normative foundation for a crewed lunar base planned for the 2030s. Latvia's accession extends the geographic reach of the Accords into the Baltic region of Eastern Europe.
