Malaysian Scientist Develops 72-Hour Perfume While Researching Batteries
Chemistry Professor Mohd Azri Opens New Horizon in Fragrance Industry Through Serendipitous Discovery During Pandemic

- •A Malaysian chemistry professor accidentally discovered a compound during battery research that led to the development of a 72-hour lasting perfume.
- •After COVID-19 canceled his MIT research, work continued at the UiTM laboratory, leading to an innovation in the perfume industry.
- •The fixative component with longevity more than 10 times longer than ordinary perfumes is the core technology.
From Battery Lab to Perfume Bottle
Dr. Mohd Azri Abd Rani, a 41-year-old chemistry professor at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Malaysia, has garnered industry attention by developing a perfume that lasts 72 hours. This is more than 10 times longer than typical fragrances, which last approximately 7-9 hours.
His perfume brand 'Dr Azri's Perfume' originated from a compound accidentally discovered during battery electrolyte research. Born in Felda Keratong 2, Pahang, he has been researching multifunctional battery technology at UiTM since 2012 and calls himself a 'perfume surgeon.'
An Unexpected Discovery Brought by COVID-19
In 2019, Dr. Azri received the Merdeka Award International Exchange Research Grant to conduct three months of battery electrolyte research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). However, when COVID-19 canceled his trip to the United States, he continued his research at the UiTM laboratory in 2020.
"During battery electrolyte testing, a new compound was created. Theoretically, combining A and B should produce C, but the results were different that time. The compound was unique and sticky. Upon analysis, it had characteristics similar to base compounds in perfume products."
Although he was focused on battery research, this discovery piqued his curiosity. He felt obligated to investigate when molecules showed potential, he says.
Validation Process Through the UK and Australia
When borders reopened in 2021, Dr. Azri visited Imperial College London and Deakin University (Australia) to conduct additional research. He comparatively analyzed the compound he discovered against aromatic substances in various commercial perfumes, including famous international brands.
After returning to Malaysia in late June 2021, he resumed research at UiTM, and through numerous failures and successes, finally identified the key characteristic of this compound. It was a fixative - a fundamental ingredient that extends the longevity of perfume.
Test results showed that this molecule could preserve fragrance for up to 72 hours.
From Scientist to Perfumer
In the perfume industry, longevity is a core competitive advantage. Dr. Azri's discovery was an achievement that crossed the boundaries between chemical research and commercial product development.
For him, perfume is not merely a commercial product but a symbol of learning, creativity, and the courage to explore. His journey of challenging a new field while maintaining his identity as a battery researcher demonstrates how unexpected discoveries can lead to innovation.
Future Prospects [AI Analysis]
Dr. Azri's case is a representative example showing the importance of interdisciplinary research. Two completely different fields - battery technology and perfume manufacturing - met to create new value.
It's also noteworthy that Malaysia's scientific research capabilities are growing to international standards. If a system for systematically commercializing such serendipitous discoveries is established in the future, more scientists will be able to connect their research achievements to the market.
Particularly, 72-hour lasting perfume aligns with consumer trends that emphasize sustainability. The fact that less quantity can be used for longer periods has high potential to connect with environmentally friendly consumption.
