Another Crisis Three Weeks In

The New York Mets have tumbled into a deep pit just three weeks into the 2026 season, riding an eight-game losing streak to a 7-12 record. They sit only a half-game ahead of the Giants and Rockies for the NL's worst record and already trail the division-leading Atlanta Braves by five games. During the skid, the offense has managed just 12 runs and been shut out three times.

What makes the situation sting more is the eerie familiarity. Despite one of the most aggressive offseasons in franchise history, the Mets look like a carbon copy of the team that stumbled to the finish in 2025.

Bad Luck or Structural Flaw?

An NL executive offered measured optimism, noting the team's .266 BABIP ranks in the bottom 10 of MLB. "That won't last," the exec said, suggesting underlying results have been worse than actual performance. Yet bad luck alone doesn't explain everything. The Mets surged to 7-4 after sweeping the Giants and stealing a walk-off win over Arizona, only to be swept by the Athletics and then the Dodgers — matching their longest losing streak since 2018.

An AL executive painted a bleaker picture of the clubhouse: "It's a weird collection of high-profile players. I'm not sure there's much of a soul to that team. It just doesn't scream 'winning team' even though objectively it adds up."

Stars Who Aren't Producing

Juan Soto's calf injury, which has sidelined him since April 3, is the most obvious wound in the lineup. Fortunately, he's expected to return from the IL next week. But the issues run deeper. Bo Bichette, Marcus Semien, and Jorge Polanco — three of the headlining offseason additions — are all carrying an OPS below .600.

Bichette has drawn the harshest scrutiny. An NL exec said his sprint speed is visibly down, a residue of the sprained PCL that knocked him out of the 2025 postseason. "He's not barreling balls at all, and his swing decisions have been even poorer than usual," the exec added.

The Benge Gamble

Rookie Carson Benge won the right field job with a stellar spring, but the jump to the majors has been harsh: a .151/.237/.226 slash line with one homer and three RBIs in 59 plate appearances. An AL executive argued the decision was avoidable, saying the Mets should have told Benge from day one that no spring performance would earn him an Opening Day roster spot. "The gap between Triple-A and the big leagues has never been greater," he said. "You have to think above and beyond what is on the surface."

Not Dead Yet

A 7-12 start is not a death sentence. Since 2000, seven teams have overcome similar starts to reach October, with four winning their division. But for the Mets, a real turnaround likely requires Soto's healthy return, a Bichette rebound, and — perhaps most critically — a clubhouse that starts to cohere.
