Stepping on the moon again after 50 years
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has officially announced plans to land astronauts on the lunar surface for the first time in 50 years since Apollo 17 in 1972. NASA unveiled a series of large-scale initiatives to strengthen America's space leadership at an event on March 24 (local time), presenting the resumption of manned lunar exploration as a key goal.
On this day, three moon rocks from past Apollo missions were displayed at the event, symbolically showing the history of space exploration and the future direction of humanity.
Development of permanent lunar base and nuclear propulsion technology
There are three main points of the initiative announced by NASA. First, it will land astronauts on the lunar surface for the first time in more than 50 years. Second, to build the initial components of a permanent lunar base. Third, we will begin full-scale development of a space transportation system using nuclear propulsion technology.
Nuclear propulsion technology is much more efficient than existing chemical fuel rockets, and is considered an essential technology for deep space exploration, such as on Mars. NASA leadership emphasized that this announcement is aimed at achieving the U.S. National Space Policy and further strengthening U.S. leadership in the space field.
Why is it the moon again now?
This announcement is not simply a reenactment of past glory. The strategic value of the moon as an outpost for deep space exploration is being re-evaluated. Ice discovered in the lunar south pole can not only serve as a source of drinking water and oxygen for astronauts, but can also be decomposed into hydrogen and oxygen, which are rocket fuels, so it is expected to serve as a 'space gas station'.
In addition, as a new space race intensifies, with China and Russia pursuing the construction of a joint lunar base, the need for the United States to accelerate its lunar exploration program to maintain space supremacy has increased. The construction of a permanent base is expected to serve as a bridgehead for sustainable lunar exploration and advancement to Mars.
