Canadian Duo Wins Oscar for Production Design

Nova Scotia-born production designer Tamara Deverell and set decorator Shane Vieau won the Best Production Design award at the 98th Academy Awards on March 13 (local time) for Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein'. The win caps off a dominant awards season run for the duo in the production design category.

Deverell, who resides in Cape Breton, relocated to Nova Scotia approximately eight years ago, drawn by the region's arts and culture. She has been working from this base ever since. For 'Frankenstein', she created a total of 119 sets, including a complete recreation of Arctic tundra environment built in a Toronto parking garage.

Complete Awards Season Sweep

The Oscar win for Deverell and Vieau was widely anticipated. The pair had already won production design awards at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), Critics Choice Awards, and the Art Directors Guild Awards (ADG), establishing themselves as the season's dominant force. The ADG award, in particular, is considered a key predictor of the Oscar for Production Design, making their Academy Award win highly expected ahead of the ceremony.

'Frankenstein' took home three Oscars in total, also winning Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Costume Design. The sweep in visual arts categories reflects the high regard for del Toro's signature Gothic and dreamlike mise-en-scène.

'One Battle After Another' Takes Best Picture

Meanwhile, the evening's top honor, Best Picture, went to Paul Thomas Anderson's 'One Battle After Another'. The film emerged as the night's biggest winner, claiming six awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Casting, and Best Supporting Actor (Sean Penn).

'Sinners', starring Michael B. Jordan who won Best Actor, received a record 16 nominations but took home four awards (Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography). Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who won for cinematography, made history as the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Cinematography.

Best Actress went to Jessie Buckley for 'Hamnet', while Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for 'Weapons'. The Korean-set musical fantasy 'KPop Demon Hunters' won both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
