War on 'Pause,' Numbers Still Murky

The U.S. Pentagon continues to underreport American casualties from Operation Epic Fury, the war against Iran, despite repeated calls for correction and an internal defense official's own characterization of the situation as a "casualty cover-up," according to ongoing reporting by The Intercept.

A fragile ceasefire is currently in place between the United States and Iran, though Chair of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Dan Caine described the halt in fighting as merely "a pause" at a Wednesday press conference. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth added that U.S. forces remain "prepared to restart at a moment's notice."

A Name Missing from the Official Count

The Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS), the Pentagon body responsible for reporting casualties to Congress and the president, lists 13 U.S. deaths — both hostile and non-hostile — in connection with Operation Epic Fury.

Absent from that list is Maj. Sorffly Davius, a signals and communications officer with the New York Army National Guard, who died of sudden illness on March 6, 2026, while on duty at Camp Buehring, Kuwait. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) publicly confirmed at a memorial service last month that Davius "passed away while deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation Epic Fury." Gen. Caine also acknowledged Davius while "honoring our fallen" from the war. The Pentagon did not respond to a request for comment on why Davius was omitted from the official rolls.

Wounded Figures Contradict Each Other

The problem extends well beyond the death count. Two separate pages on the DCAS website, both updated on April 8, display conflicting wounded-in-action totals: one lists 372, the other 357 — a 15-person gap internally, and a discrepancy of up to 23 percent compared to the figure of 303 that U.S. Central Command provided to The Intercept on March 30. CENTCOM has not responded to more than a dozen follow-up requests for clarification in the week since.

'Non-Hostile' Injuries Excluded by Design

Beyond the inconsistencies, the very way DCAS defines casualties distorts the picture. While the system tracks non-hostile deaths, it excludes non-hostile injuries entirely. The most glaring example: a March 12 fire aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford left more than 200 sailors requiring treatment for smoke inhalation or lacerations. Neither DCAS nor CENTCOM includes these individuals in official wounded tallies. The carrier subsequently left the combat zone for repairs.

Combat injury figures are also incomplete. President Trump described one rescued F-15 pilot as "bleeding rather profusely" and "injured quite badly." Personnel were also hurt when an A-10 Warthog crashed near the Strait of Hormuz. Whether these cases are reflected in current statistics remains unverifiable.

A Recurring Pattern

Under-reporting of wartime casualties is not new to the U.S. military. Similar controversies arose during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, when traumatic brain injuries and other non-visible wounds were systematically excluded from official counts, eventually prompting congressional hearings.

Researchers who study military transparency note a structural incentive to minimize casualty figures during active conflicts, as accurate numbers can fuel antiwar sentiment and trigger legislative scrutiny of war authorizations.

How long the current ceasefire holds remains uncertain. Gen. Caine's "pause" framing suggests the door to renewed combat remains open; if fighting resumes, the casualty accounting problem is likely to intensify.

Congressional pressure for a full accounting may grow, particularly given Rep. Lawler's public connection of Maj. Davius's death to Operation Epic Fury. Military law experts suggest the internal DCAS inconsistencies expose a design flaw: the system's exclusion of non-hostile injuries structurally obscures the true human cost of the conflict, and legislative reform to address that gap is increasingly likely to be discussed on Capitol Hill.
