Carolina Mejía, Mayor of the Distrito Nacional in the Dominican Republic, inspected the sports facilities under construction in the Malecón area of the capital, Santo Domingo.

During her site visit, Mayor Mejía announced that construction of the soccer field and skate park is proceeding according to schedule. These facilities, set against the backdrop of the Caribbean Sea, are being developed as part of Santo Domingo's waterfront redevelopment project.

"This facility with the Caribbean Sea as its backdrop is truly a dream space," Mayor Mejía said, evaluating it as a milestone in the modernization of the Malecón.

Accelerating Preparations for July's Central American and Caribbean Games

This construction is underway ahead of the 2026 Santo Domingo Central American and Caribbean Games opening on July 24. Currently, the soccer field has only spectator seating and some finishing work remaining, while the skate park is approximately 85% complete.

Jorge Domínguez Michelén, President of the Distrito Nacional Football Association, described it as "a visually beautiful space" and revealed plans to use it for youth tournaments starting in April. In particular, the skate park is scheduled to be used as the venue for street sports competitions at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Malecón Transforms into Multi-Purpose Sports Complex

The Malecón Sports Park will include, in addition to the soccer field and skate park, basketball courts, volleyball courts, expanded parking facilities, spectator seating, and amenities.

The site inspection was accompanied by Yolanda de la Rosa, Director of Innovation and Special Projects, Alonzo Rosario Chalas, Director of Urban Infrastructure, as well as engineers and contractor representatives.

Mayor Mejía emphasized that the construction schedule is proceeding as planned and promised that all facilities will be completed before the Central American and Caribbean Games.
