A Two-Year Battle Comes to an End

MLB legend Phil Garner passed away on the night of April 11 at the age of 76 after a prolonged fight with pancreatic cancer. His family confirmed the news in a statement, saying he "passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and love after a two-plus-year battle" with the disease. Garner was diagnosed in February 2024 and underwent extensive radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

His final public appearance came on April 30 of this year — his 76th birthday — when he threw out the first pitch at an Astros home game. Former teammates and players he managed gathered to pay their respects one last time.

The Man Called 'Scrap Iron'

Garner earned his famous nickname from Hall of Fame announcer Milo Hamilton during his Pittsburgh Pirates days. Hamilton observed a young third baseman who always had dirt on his uniform and never shied from a hard-hit ball — and the name stuck for life.

Over a 16-year playing career (1973–1988) with the A's, Pirates, Astros, Dodgers, and Giants, Garner was a three-time All-Star. His finest moment as a player came in the 1979 World Series, when he batted .500 (12-for-24) as the 'We Are Family' Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles.

A Manager's Fire

After retiring, Garner brought that same competitive spirit to the dugout. Managing the Brewers, Tigers, and Astros, he led Houston to its first-ever World Series appearance in 2005. Hall of Fame first baseman Jeff Bagwell called him "competitive, honest, and accountable — everything a great leader should be."

Astros owner Jim Crane said in a statement that "Phil Garner's contributions to the Houston Astros, the city of Houston and to the game of baseball will not be forgotten."

From Tennessee to the Hall of Memory

Born on April 30, 1949, in Jefferson City, Tennessee, Garner was the son of a Baptist preacher who earned a baseball scholarship to the University of Tennessee, where he was a two-time All-SEC honoree. He was selected third overall by Oakland in the January 1971 secondary draft. The University of Tennessee retired his No. 18 jersey in 2009.
