Full Group Returns to Gwanghwamun After 3 Years

The South Korean government has raised the terror alert level to "Caution" for central Seoul ahead of BTS's free comeback concert at Gwanghwamun Plaza this Saturday (March 21). The performance, expected to draw approximately 260,000 fans, marks the first full-group stage appearance in 3 years and 5 months since BTS members completed their military service.

The concert, taking place at the historic plaza in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace, celebrates the release of their fifth studio album "Arirang," dropping on March 20. Traffic restrictions and nearby subway station closures are scheduled for the event day.

The Return of a Global Fandom

When BTS announced their reunion last July via fan platform Weverse, over 7 million viewers tuned in to the live broadcast. For global fans, this represents the first opportunity to see the complete group perform in 7 years, since their world tour was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Netflix will livestream the concert globally at 8 PM Korean time. BTS will also make their first full-group appearance on a U.S. late-night talk show since 2021, appearing on "The Tonight Show" on March 25 and 26.

A Meticulously Designed Comeback Roadmap

BTS will embark on a world tour beginning April 9 at Goyang Stadium (capacity over 40,000), performing 82 shows across 34 cities in 23 countries. The Goyang concert on April 11 and Tokyo performance on April 18 will be broadcast live to theaters in 75 countries.

Gwanghwamun Plaza stands as a symbolic center of Korea, where statues of King Sejong, creator of the Korean alphabet, and Admiral Yi Sun-sin, hero of the Imjin War, are erected. The return stage of K-pop's biggest icon at this location adds cultural significance beyond a mere music performance.

According to multiple foreign media outlets, BTS's last global tour in 2019 generated approximately $246 million in revenue, setting a record for K-pop artist tours. Industry attention is focused on the potential impact this comeback will have on the music market.

Netflix will release "BTS: The Return," a documentary chronicling the group's journey back to the stage, on March 27.
