In Yutang Subdistrict, Guangming District, Shenzhen — a dense patchwork of urban villages and industrial zones — a 54,690-square-meter multipurpose civic facility has opened its doors. Designed by GL Studio, the Yutang Culture and Sports Center integrates a sports hall, library, cultural center, art gallery, performance space, community health service center, bus terminal, and retail facilities under a single roof. With approximately 29,000 square meters above ground and 25,690 below, the complex primarily serves residents of nearby urban villages and the surrounding industrial workforce.

The urban village problem in Shenzhen traces back to the explosive urbanization that followed the city's designation as a Special Economic Zone in 1980. Original rural residents, excluded from formal development, built upward on their collective land holdings, creating the so-called "handshake buildings" (握手村) — towers so tightly packed that neighbors can almost reach across to touch.

From the 2000s onward, Shenzhen pursued an "urban renewal" (城市更新) policy targeting these areas, but demolition-first approaches generated backlash over displacement and the loss of affordable housing.
