The Day Sports Heaven Opened

On September 7, 1979, anchor Lee Leonard looked into the camera and declared: "If you're a fan, what you'll see in the next minutes, hours and days to follow may convince you you've gone to sports heaven." That moment marked the beginning of ESPN.

A new documentary, Sports Heaven: The Birth of ESPN, revisits that milestone — tracing how one of broadcasting's most audacious bets went on to shape the entire modern sports media ecosystem.

An Idea Nobody Believed In

In 1978, Bill Rasmussen had just been fired from the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association. Together with his 22-year-old son Scott, he hatched what many dismissed as a ridiculous plan: a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week cable channel dedicated entirely to sports.

At the time, sports on television was largely confined to weekend afternoons and Monday Night Football. "Bill believed that there was a nation of insatiable sports fans and built the business to serve them," said Mike Soltys, ESPN's historian, who has been with the network since nearly its first broadcast.

The father-and-son team set up shop in Bristol, Connecticut, and locked in a launch date just over 14 months away — one they refused to move. Director Greg DeHart says the rigid timeline revealed "how deeply they believed in their idea, and how that belief created opportunities with sheer will."

Technology Made the Dream Possible

ESPN's launch wasn't just a triumph of vision — it was enabled by the rise of cable television and satellite broadcasting. The Rasmussens secured financial backing from Getty Oil and struck deals with RCA, Anheuser-Busch, and major cable operators.

A communications satellite orbiting 22,000 miles above Earth allowed the network to beam a signal across the entire United States around the clock. "As exciting as that possibility was, it also created a huge challenge — finding enough programming to fill all that time," DeHart explained.

The solution came through a landmark deal with the NCAA, supplemented by a mix of lesser-known sports, highlights, and studio programming — including SportsCenter, which remains ESPN's flagship show to this day.

46 Years of Evolution

ESPN has never coasted on its founding glory. From cable expansion to radio, international markets, digital platforms, social media, and now direct-to-consumer streaming, the network has consistently moved first on new distribution models.

A turning point came in 1996 when The Walt Disney Company acquired Capital Cities/ABC, bringing ESPN under the Disney umbrella. "The alignment with ABC has been critical through the years," Soltys said. "Even in 2026, the power of having a broadcast partner is necessary to maximize opportunities with leagues, advertisers and fans."

DeHart summed up ESPN's current standing simply: "Today, ESPN is the cultural meeting place for sports fans across the world. If you want to watch sports, you go to ESPN first."
