Stephen King's 1982 Vision of 2025 Returns to the Big Screen
Glen Powell Stars in New 'Running Man' as a 40-Year-Old Dystopian Novel Meets Reality

- •Stephen King's 1982 novel 'The Running Man' has been adapted by director Edgar Wright with Glen Powell in the lead role.
- •Unlike the 1987 Schwarzenegger version, this adaptation faithfully recreates the original's dark tone and 30-day survival premise.
- •With internet-age updates and distinctive action choreography, it reveals where a 40-year-old dystopia intersects with contemporary reality.
A 40-Year-Old Prophecy Becomes Reality
Stephen King's 1982 novel 'The Running Man' is a dystopian tale set in 2025. It depicts extreme poverty, corporate dominance, and an entertainment industry that exploits the suffering. Environmental destruction, mass surveillance, and even the resurgence of polio are part of the narrative. Now that 2025 has arrived, these prophetic elements have taken on an eerie sense of realism.
Director Edgar Wright's new film 'The Running Man' offers a more faithful reinterpretation of the novel. Glen Powell stars as protagonist Ben Richards, who enters a deadly survival game show to pay for his sick daughter's medical treatment. If he can survive 30 days evading professional assassins, he wins $1 billion—but no one has survived yet.
Key Differences from the 1987 Version
The 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film significantly altered the source material. The setup changed to a falsely accused police officer forced into the game as punishment, and the 30-day real-world chase was condensed into a 3-hour arena battle. It was a flashy action film featuring cartoonish villains.
The new adaptation returns to the novel's bleak tone. Richards applies to the game show because he can't afford to call a doctor for his daughter who has the flu. Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), an executive at the massive corporation running the show called 'The Network', sees Ben's rage and physical capabilities as perfect contestant material.
The leader of the 'Hunters' pursuing Richards is McCone (Lee Pace). Though celebrated as a hero by the Network and viewers, he wears a mask to conceal his identity—evidence that he knows how thin the line between adoration and hatred truly is.
Edgar Wright's Signature Action Style
Edgar Wright, director of 'Shaun of the Dead', 'Hot Fuzz', 'Baby Driver', and 'Scott Pilgrim', is renowned for his distinctive action choreography. This film showcases that talent brilliantly.
The confrontation scene inside a cheap hotel (a YMCA in the original novel) is packed with tension. Car chase sequences are mostly filmed from Richards' perspective inside the trunk. Audiences vividly experience the noise and chaos while encountering a freshness that differs from the typical presentation of squealing tires and vehicle shake.
Glen Powell demonstrates strong chemistry with the supporting cast. Michael Cera is particularly impressive. Reuniting with Wright since 'Scott Pilgrim', Cera appears as Richards' ally who despises both the system and the police. Daniel Ezra, known for the 'All American' series, also delivers a solid performance as a character entangled with the Running Man game show.
Updated for the Internet Age
In 1982, King didn't include the online world in his novel—the internet didn't exist yet. But if he had known about it, he certainly would have. The film modernizes this aspect, a choice that has been well-received.
Edgar Wright's 'The Running Man' finds new meaning at the intersection where a 40-year-old dystopian novel meets the reality of 2025. This film, where spectacular action coexists with sharp social critique, makes us reconsider the world we're living in.
