Summary
  • Dutch indie studio Enchanted Works' 'Nomori' made its debut at the GDC ID@Xbox event.
  • A physics-based puzzle game combining Studio Ghibli-style visuals with portal mechanics, featuring unique gameplay that challenges spatial perception.
  • Currently in development by a small remote team, with releases on Xbox and PC platforms expected through the ID@Xbox program.

A Puzzle Game Hidden Within Storybook Visuals

Dutch indie game studio Enchanted Works unveiled 'Nomori' for the first time at the recent GDC (Game Developers Conference) ID@Xbox event. Despite its charming visuals reminiscent of Studio Ghibli animations, the game's core lies in physics-based puzzles that challenge spatial perception.

The game begins when a girl named Kiko, on her way to her grandmother's house, accidentally falls into a spirit world. While a fairy-tale universe unfolds with floating islands, friendly mushroom characters, and giant talking cats, players soon realize this is no simple adventure game.

Puzzles Solved Through Portal Mechanics

Nomori's most distinctive feature is its puzzle design utilizing a portal system. Players must create and manipulate portals that connect spaces, using physics laws in reverse to overcome obstacles. This core mechanism, which differentiates it from existing puzzle games, implements gameplay that demands "thinking outside the box."

In an on-site GDC interview, Enchanted Works studio director Marnix Licht explained, "We're developing with a small remote team distributed across the Netherlands." The studio has garnered attention for implementing innovative game mechanics and high-quality visuals despite being a small team.

New Possibilities for Indie Games

Nomori follows the recent indie game market trend of "art-focused puzzle games." As works like Gris and A Short Hike have achieved commercial success, demand has grown for titles that harmoniously combine visual art with game mechanics.

The reveal through the ID@Xbox program is part of Microsoft's strategy to support independent developers. With Xbox Game Pass providing a platform for indie games to reach broader player audiences, an environment has been created where small studios can attempt ambitious projects.

While the GDC demo showed only a portion of the game's early stages, it received positive reactions from industry professionals. Exact release dates and platform information haven't been announced yet, but given its presentation at the ID@Xbox event, releases on Xbox and PC platforms appear likely.
