A Question a Century Old — Still Without an Answer

Can a urinal be art? The question Marcel Duchamp posed in New York in 1917 remains unanswered a century later. Two concurrent exhibitions — a major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and a focused presentation at Gagosian — have simultaneously returned Duchamp's readymades to the center of the art world.

MoMA's retrospective surveys the full arc of Duchamp's career, while Gagosian turns its attention to the 1964 Schwarz editions: a series of authorized reconstructions of key readymades produced in collaboration with Milan-based dealer Arturo Schwarz. Both exhibitions resist treating the works as historical artifacts. They insist these objects are still alive — still productive, still unresolvable.

From Bicycle Wheel to Schwarz Edition: A Historical Thread

Duchamp first made a readymade in 1913: a bicycle wheel mounted atop a wooden kitchen stool. The spokes spinning with no destination quietly dismantled the three pillars of traditional sculpture — form, intention, and function. It hovered between object and idea, belonging to neither.

The pivotal moment came in 1917. Duchamp purchased a standard porcelain urinal, rotated it ninety degrees, signed it with the pseudonym 'R. Mutt,' and submitted it to the Society of Independent Artists exhibition in New York. The hanging committee rejected it. Duchamp resigned. A photograph of Fountain taken by Alfred Stieglitz was published in a small art journal, and that single image went on to become one of the most consequential photographs in the history of modern art.

Most of the original readymades were lost or discarded. In 1964, Arturo Schwarz worked with Duchamp to reconstruct thirteen key works in editions of eight. These Schwarz editions form the core of the Gagosian presentation. The irony — that reproductions have outlasted and outpaced originals — is entirely Duchampian. He had long rejected 'retinal' art, art that satisfies the eye, in favor of art understood through the brain.

Duchamp died in 1968, but the slow-release mechanism he activated has continued firing for decades. Its lineage runs through the Fluxus movement of the 1960s, Joseph Kosuth's language-based conceptualism, the appropriation art of Cindy Sherman and Richard Prince, and into the present era of NFTs and AI-generated imagery.

The dual staging of these exhibitions signals more than retrospective appreciation. The art world is currently confronting questions of selection, designation, and authorship in a new and urgent form — through artificial intelligence (AI). If an artist selects an AI-generated image and presents it in a gallery, how is that meaningfully different from Duchamp's readymade? This is among the most contested debates in contemporary art, and no clear consensus has emerged.

Art theorists hold sharply divergent views. Some argue that the readymade's logic may well validate AI-assisted selection as a legitimate creative act. Others counter that AI in fact resurrects a form of technical mastery — the very thing Duchamp was deliberately dismantling — through an entirely different route. Either way, the question remains open. That is precisely why these works are still being exhibited, a hundred years on.
