  • The indie game industry is concerned about the risks that platforms' unauthorized AI use poses to creator rights and brand image.

Unauthorized AI Ad Generation Controversy

Indie game publisher Finji, known for publishing Night in the Woods and Tunic, has accused TikTok's advertising platform of using generative AI to alter advertisements without permission. One particularly problematic ad reportedly depicted Finji's characters in a racially discriminatory and sexually distorted manner.

Finji CEO and co-founder Rebekah Saltsman first disclosed this incident via Bluesky and told IGN in an interview that "this happened despite disabling all AI advertising features."

Platform's Irresponsible Response

Saltsman reported that while TikTok's customer support team acknowledged the problem, they failed to provide concrete solutions despite weeks of communication. TikTok did not respond to IGN's request for comment, and Saltsman criticized the platform's response as inconsistent and inadequate in addressing consent violations and offensive content issues.

The incident occurred while Finji was running an advertising campaign on TikTok to promote its games, including the upcoming title Usual June. Industry observers note that this controversy has once again highlighted issues surrounding the indiscriminate use of AI technology and platform accountability.

Impact on the Indie Game Ecosystem

Indie game studios heavily rely on social media platforms due to limited marketing budgets. The fact that even an established indie publisher like Finji was helpless against a platform's unilateral AI usage suggests the risks smaller developers could face.

Particularly for indie games where character identity and representation are core values, unauthorized altered advertisements can distort creators' intentions and deal devastating blows to brand image. Given that Night in the Woods is recognized for its sensitive treatment of mental health and identity issues, this incident likely represents an especially serious concern for Finji.
