London-based architecture firm Haworth Tompkins has completed the major redevelopment of Theatr Clwyd, Wales' largest producing theater. A History Rooted in 1970s Cultural Policy

Theatr Clwyd was born out of Britain's regional cultural policy of the 1970s. Designed by R.W. Harvey, the county architect for Flintshire, the building was officially opened on May 21, 1976, by Queen Elizabeth II under the name 'Clwyd Theater and Educational Technology Centre.' It was conceived as a comprehensive arts complex — housing multiple performance spaces, TV studios, a gallery, and function rooms — perched on a hillside above the town of Mold to serve the wider North Wales population.

For nearly fifty years, it has been a cornerstone of Welsh performing arts. Yet aging infrastructure and accessibility shortfalls had long called for a comprehensive response. With this redevelopment now complete, the theater enters a new chapter — one that honors its past while opening its doors wider than ever before.
