The Vote That Failed — But Mattered

Sen. Bernie Sanders forced a Senate vote to block the sale of bombs and bulldozers to Israel. The resolutions failed largely along party lines, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer joining 11 fellow Democrats in opposing the measure on 1,000-pound bombs and seven Democrats opposing the bulldozer restriction.

But the headline isn't the defeat. A record number of Democrats voted against sending weapons to Israel — a signal that anti-war sentiment within the party has reached a new threshold.

The Leadership Gap

Former Sanders foreign policy adviser Matt Duss argues that "a supermajority of Democrats oppose this war and are generally against America's global military interventions." Yet the party's leadership remains wedded to a hawkish foreign policy tradition.

"We have a Democratic Party leadership that is still part of this very small — and thankfully dwindling, though not fast enough — hawkish faction that is wedded to this idea of American global military domination," Duss said.

The vote came against the backdrop of President Trump's hyper-aggressive military posture. The U.S.-Israel war on Iran has now exceeded a month, with a fragile ceasefire currently in place.

The Kafkaesque Strait

The front line of U.S.-Iran tensions is now the Strait of Hormuz. Iran closed the strait after the war began; the U.S. made reopening it a war aim. But after Iran agreed to reopen the strait under certain conditions and the U.S. rejected those terms, it is now the United States that is blockading the Strait of Hormuz — the very waterway it claimed to be fighting to reopen.

Talks have reached an impasse, and the ceasefire holds only tenuously.

The Long Shadow of American Militarism

Duss warned against blaming the conflict solely on Israel or Trump. "My concern about blaming this all on Israel is that it lets Washington off the hook," he said. "We have a foreign policy establishment that is addicted to militarism, that is addicted to war, who often work at think tanks that are largely funded by the military–industrial complex."

The U.S. has conducted drone strikes across the Middle East and Africa for decades. Under Trump, the scope has widened further to include naval strikes against alleged drug traffickers. "This Iran war is the most egregious and horrible expression of trends in our foreign policy that have been building for a long time," Duss said.

The pattern is not new. Barack Obama rode anti-war sentiment to the presidency, then dramatically expanded drone warfare. Trump campaigned against "endless wars" in 2016 — and is now waging one against Iran.

Outlook [Expert Analysis]

Duss sees the current moment as an opening. "There's a real constituency here for this message," he said, calling for "a foreign policy for this era that is based around building peace rather than making war."

With record anti-war votes in the Senate, the non-interventionist foreign policy agenda is likely to become a major fault line in the Democratic Party ahead of the 2026 midterms. But with Schumer and the leadership holding firm, internal divisions are likely to intensify rather than resolve.

If the Strait of Hormuz blockade persists, the consequences for global oil supply chains — and the world economy — could be severe. The deeper question Duss raises — whether America can break its addiction to militarism — will not be answered by a single Senate vote. But the record number of Democrats who said no to arms for Israel suggests the reckoning has begun.
