When a Building Can Be Political

In 1963, a twenty-three-year-old Ricardo Bofill founded the Taller de Arquitectura — literally, the Architecture Workshop — in Barcelona. He had been expelled from the Barcelona School of Architecture not for academic failure, but for left-wing activism against the Franco dictatorship. Its outward faces are painted carmine and cotton-candy pink — hues Bofill insisted were drawn from the atmospheric light of the Mediterranean. Color here is not decoration but a structural element of the spatial experience.

This approach recurs across Kafka's Castle in Sant Pere de Ribes and the Red Sol Resort in Dhërmi, Albania. Layers of repetition, rotation, and color accumulate until the visitor oscillates between system and sensation, order and disorientation — a rhythm that defines the Taller's entire body of work.

The 1960s and 70s in Spain were a period of fracture and democratic transition following decades of Francoist rule. The cultural and political periphery where the Taller operated proved paradoxically to be the most fertile ground for architectural invention. As AI-driven design tools reshape how form is generated, critics argue the Taller model — a multidisciplinary collective that experiments collectively with space — may prove more relevant now than ever.
