Youth Converge at UN Headquarters

Young leaders, innovators and advocates from across the globe gathered at United Nations Headquarters in New York for the 2026 Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum. Held under the theme Innovate, Unite and Transform: Youth Shaping the Road to 2030, the forum spotlights youth as essential partners in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) amid overlapping crises — from climate change to the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution.

Why This Matters

According to UN data, there are currently 1.2 billion people aged 15 to 24, representing 16 percent of the global population. By 2030, that figure is projected to grow by seven percent to nearly 1.3 billion. As SDG deadlines approach, young people are both the most affected by systemic failures and among the most powerful agents of change available.

ECOSOC President Lok Bahadur Thapa opened the forum by naming the challenges confronting youth today: geopolitical tensions, climate change, economic uncertainty, widening inequalities, technological disruption and digital divides. Yet he underscored that "hope, solidarity and innovation are already alive in every region of the world."

Keynote speaker Jaewon Choi, leader of the youth-led NGO DMUN Foundation, delivered a stark warning: "Every 4.4 seconds, a young person dies — from malnutrition, from preventable disease, from violence, from natural disasters." He argued that many young people remain excluded from the very systems designed to serve them.

The SDG Countdown: A Decade of Progress Under Pressure

The SDGs were adopted by 193 UN member states in 2015, setting 17 ambitious targets — from ending poverty to advancing climate action — to be achieved by 2030. Yet a decade on, progress has fallen significantly short of expectations.

A cascade of setbacks — the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East, and escalating climate disasters — has repeatedly derailed implementation. A 2023 UN SDG Summit assessment found fewer than half of the goals on track. Since then, fiscal austerity among major donor nations has further weakened international development flows.

The ECOSOC Youth Forum has become a key venue for channeling youth-driven solutions into this process. Forum outcomes are expected to inform the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, scheduled for July.

General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock addressed three distinct audiences: she called on permanent representatives to "follow through, no excuses"; urged ministers to take forum discussions beyond the chamber; and encouraged young people to "keep pushing boundaries, keep questioning, keep leading." Her remark that young people need not "dress like diplomats in a dark suit" to be taken seriously drew wide attention as a challenge to institutional gatekeeping.

Experts anticipate that as 2030 approaches, formal spaces for youth participation within UN processes are likely to expand. However, analysts caution that without genuine decision-making authority, participation risks remaining symbolic — potentially deepening youth disillusionment with multilateral institutions.

For South Korea, a nation that ranks relatively well on SDG implementation among advanced economies but lags on youth political representation, the forum's message carries particular weight. As intergenerational tensions over inequality and climate policy intensify domestically, pressure to create meaningful institutional pathways for youth engagement is likely to grow.
