Summary
  • Three provinces in central Argentina held a joint forum for soil conservation.
  • Experts seriously diagnosed soil health deterioration and called for policy responses.
  • The establishment of integrated soil management policies through regional cooperation was discussed.

Protecting Agricultural Foundation Through Regional Cooperation

Three provinces in central Argentina have joined forces for a collective response to soil conservation. The 'Central Region Soil Management and Conservation Forum' held on July 29 in Paraná, Entre Ríos, brought together experts, producers, and scholars from Entre Ríos, Córdoba, and Santa Fe provinces.

This forum went beyond simple information sharing to serve as a platform for practical discussions on establishing regional joint policies. Guillermo Bernaudo, Minister of Economic Development for Entre Ríos Province, stated, "We value the central region's collaborative approach, and today's meeting will serve as the foundation for developing joint policies."

Soil Health: The Core of Agricultural Productivity

Participants repeatedly emphasized that soil is not merely a means of production but the most important capital of the three provinces. Jorge Chemes, representative from Entre Ríos, stressed the importance of soil conservation, saying, "Soil is both a tool and capital through which we create productive resources."

Pedro Barbagelata, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the National University of Entre Ríos, expressed concern: "We have been running soil conservation courses for nearly 40 years, but we continue to witness soil not being properly managed in the field."

Each Province's Crisis Awareness

Ignacio Mantaras, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock for Santa Fe Province, offered a more direct diagnosis. "The current assessment is that the health status of Santa Fe's soil is not good," he stated, identifying soil management as a core policy issue.

Marcos Landa, Minister of Agriculture for Córdoba Province, emphasized, "We must respect the soil. Without producers and soil, production is impossible, and if each province does not support this with appropriate policies, everything becomes difficult."

A Warning Across Generations

Congressman Atilio Benedetti raised awareness of the severity of soil degradation by sharing personal experiences. "I learned through my father's work in childhood. As the soil weakened, crops also weakened year by year, and as the soil became impoverished, the village also became poor."

This forum also saw the participation of Uruguayan experts, demonstrating the possibility of cross-border cooperation. Participants shared diagnoses and experiences while exploring policy directions for sustainable agriculture.

Soil is the foundation of agricultural production and the cornerstone of regional economies. This collaboration among the three provinces originated from the recognition that an integrated approach at the regional level is necessary, beyond the limitations of individual policies.
