First Official Duties After Accession
Luxembourg's new head of state, Grand Duke Guillaume, began his first official working day on October 6, holding meetings with key government figures. After completing three days of inauguration ceremonies, Grand Duke Guillaume met with Chamber of Deputies President Claude Wiseler in the morning and Prime Minister Luc Frieden in the afternoon.
President Wiseler described the conversation with the Grand Duke as "very pleasant and direct," noting that "the Grand Duke showed great interest in parliamentary activities." He added that institutional coordination is needed to ensure smooth cooperation between parliament and the head of state. A meeting with State Council President Marc Thewes is scheduled for Tuesday.
Daily Life in Luxembourg's Constitutional Monarchy
Meetings with the Grand Duke are always held in private according to Luxembourg's constitutional tradition. President Wiseler emphasized the principle of confidentiality, stating he "cannot and does not wish to" discuss the content of the talks. This practice ensures the political neutrality of the head of state in a constitutional monarchy.
Luxembourg is the only remaining Grand Duchy in Europe. The Grand Duke, as head of state, performs a symbolic role, while actual governance is conducted by the cabinet led by the Prime Minister. Grand Duke Guillaume's accession continues the succession tradition of the House of Nassau in Luxembourg.
Major Inauguration Events
Large-scale inauguration ceremonies were held throughout Luxembourg over the past 3-4 days. The Luxembourg Railway Company (CFL) operated a specially designed locomotive to commemorate the accession. The locomotive featured images of railway switches (Weiche) symbolizing the succession.
CFL management stated that "railways play a central role in Luxembourg's economy and society" and expressed their "honor to participate in this national celebration."
Germany's 35th Reunification Anniversary Also Held
During the same weekend, Germany's 35th reunification anniversary ceremony was held in Saarbrücken, Saarland. French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife were received by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Saarland Minister-President Anke Rehlinger.
This year, Saarland hosted the nationwide festival program, with tens of thousands of visitors attending what was recorded as the largest event in Saarbrücken's history. Political ceremonies, cultural programs, and civic festivals took place simultaneously.
Sports: Mercedes' First Win of the Season
Meanwhile, the F1 Grand Prix was held in Singapore. George Russell secured Mercedes' first victory of the 2025 season. Russell delivered a flawless performance in the night race held at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
This victory allowed Russell to narrow the gap with championship leader Max Verstappen in the driver standings. The win on the technically challenging urban circuit once again demonstrated Russell's consistent driving ability.
