Andrew Abbott Shines with Perfect Pitching at MLB All-Star Game
Virginia grad southpaw retires side in order on 13 pitches in 6th inning... Growth story of pitcher who drew attention since high school days

- •Cincinnati Reds' Andrew Abbott delivered perfect pitching in the 6th inning of the 2025 MLB All-Star Game with 13 pitches and three strikeouts
- •Growth story from a small Virginia high school through University of Virginia to major league All-Star
- •Dedicated coverage by local journalist Tucker McLaughlin, who recognized his talent since high school, proved prescient
Perfect Inning on the All-Star Stage
Cincinnati Reds left-handed pitcher Andrew Abbott took the mound in the 6th inning of the 2025 MLB All-Star Game and recorded a perfect three up, three down on just 13 pitches. He successfully concluded his first All-Star appearance with unwavering pitching against the American League lineup.
Abbott earned his first career All-Star selection with an outstanding first-half record of 8-1, 2.07 ERA, and 1.08 WHIP this season. He has been the most consistent left-handed pitcher in the National League, recording 83 strikeouts over 91.1 innings.
Talent Foreseen Since High School Days
Abbott's development has been noteworthy since his days at Halifax County High School in Virginia. Tucker McLaughlin, a South Boston area sports journalist, consistently covered Abbott's talent starting from his sophomore year.
During his senior season in high school in 2017, Abbott posted phenomenal numbers: 9-0 with a 0.28 ERA. He demonstrated dominant control, striking out 158 batters while issuing just 4 walks over 76.2 innings.
At the time, Abbott's smaller frame at 6'0", 170 pounds and a fastball topping out at 90 mph didn't make a strong impression on MLB scouts. However, his exceptional control and pitching sense were already special.
Breakthrough at University of Virginia
After enrolling at the University of Virginia, Abbott spent his first three years working out of the bullpen. He posted a 3-4 record with a 3.18 ERA in his freshman season, developing his skills and earning an invitation to the Cape Cod League.
When the 2020 MLB Draft was shortened due to COVID-19 and Abbott went undrafted, he transitioned to the starting rotation for his senior season. Head coach Brian O'Connor's decision proved correct.
In the 2021 season, Abbott went 9-6 with a 2.87 ERA, leading the team to the College World Series. He firmly established himself as an ace, recording 162 strikeouts over 106.2 innings.
This performance led to Abbott being selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2nd round of the 2021 MLB Draft, and he quickly ascended to the major leagues.
Major League Establishment and All-Star Leap
Abbott debuted in the majors in 2023, posting 8-6 with a 3.87 ERA in his first season, establishing himself as a reliable starting pitcher. He became a core asset for the team, recording 120 strikeouts over 109.1 innings.
Two years later in 2025, Abbott is showing even greater growth. He has one of the league's best winning percentages with just one loss in the first half, and his dominant pitching with an ERA in the low 2.00s earned him All-Star selection.
Particularly, his WHIP of 1.08 demonstrates that his control has reached elite major league level. The exceptional control ability he showed since high school is being fully displayed on the biggest stage.
Legacy Left by a Local Journalist
Tucker McLaughlin passed away in 2023 at age 67 after a four-year battle with brain cancer. Until his final moments, he covered and supported young athletes from South Boston and Halifax County.
McLaughlin was a veteran journalist who covered major college games at Duke, North Carolina, NC State, and Wake Forest, as well as Final Fours and BCS Championships. However, his true passion was discovering unknown local players and watching their growth.
Abbott's perfect All-Star Game pitching was a moment when the future McLaughlin foresaw became reality. For those who watched the journey of a high school sophomore left-hander spotted by a small local newspaper reporter become an MLB All-Star pitcher in less than 10 years, those 13 pitches carried special meaning.
