A Decade-Long Partnership Bears Fruit
Wells Fargo, one of America's four largest banks, has served as the presenting sponsor of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund's (TMCF) Leadership Institute for over a decade. This program is the premier professional development initiative for students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.
The 2025 Leadership Institute will take place October 1-4 in Washington, D.C., with over 500 students selected from 44 HBCUs nationwide participating. The event will conclude with the 38th Anniversary Awards Gala on October 4.
An Elite Talent Development Program
The Leadership Institute is not merely an event but a systematic talent cultivation system. This five-day program provides HBCU students with direct connections to Fortune 500 companies and premier organizations.
The program maintains a competitive 15% acceptance rate, with participating students averaging a 3.7 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). For many participants, this event serves as a career launchpad.
Riley Roberts, a senior majoring in Computer Science at Alabama A&M University, stated, "My goal is to receive full-time job offers across various industries."
Brandon J. Poplar, a senior studying Law at Delaware State University, offered a more detailed assessment: "The Leadership Institute isn't just a conference. It's a pipeline. It develops us as leaders, prepares us for employment, and connects us directly with employers ready to hire. I am living proof of that."
Corporate Social Responsibility and Talent Acquisition
Sandra Fernandez, Director of Wells Fargo's relationship with TMCF, emphasized, "Wells Fargo is proud to continue our long-standing partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The Leadership Institute represents more than just an event—it's a launching pad for future leaders."
TMCF President and CEO Harry L. Williams stated, "Wells Fargo has been an incredible partner for over a decade. Their leadership is essential to our mission of preparing the next generation of workforce talent through leadership development. Our students deserve the career pipeline that the Leadership Institute provides."
This program is part of a larger mission to advance pathways for economic mobility for HBCU students and intentionally diversify the future workforce within American corporations. Simultaneously, it provides organizations access to a talented and diverse student population.
The Anniversary Gala: A Platform for Giving Back
The 38th Anniversary Awards Gala on October 4 serves as TMCF's largest fundraising event, bringing together corporate executives, government officials, and philanthropists to celebrate the organization's impact on HBCU support and advancing students' access, opportunity, and economic mobility.
This black-tie event features an awards ceremony, celebrity performances, and celebrations of TMCF scholars. CEO Williams noted, "This is the biggest week of the year for the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and we are thrilled to welcome our students, partners, and supporters to the nation's capital. These events provide an opportunity to showcase that we are a top-tier organization working incredibly hard for our students and member schools."
The Anniversary Gala annually recognizes individuals and partners who contribute to the social good through activities aligned with the organization's mission.
