3D Printers Transform into Musical Instruments
Starting November 5th, Kunsthalle Praha, a contemporary art museum in Prague, Czech Republic, is presenting a unique interactive installation called 'CTRL+Play'. The star of this exhibition is none other than 3D printers. Eighteen 3D printers are arranged like an orchestra, reborn as instruments that visitors can play themselves.
The work was created in collaboration with PrusaLab, a Czech 3D printer manufacturer. Visitors can experiment with various sounds the printers can produce using special controllers and compose short pieces themselves. Music is synchronized with lighting and printer movements to create an audiovisual orchestra.
Martina Frajtak, Program Manager at Kunsthalle Praha, explained: "This work utilizes the fact that 3D printers can actually produce musical tones. The installation also connects to the building's past as a power substation, developing motifs of electricity, light, and movement."
A Free Art Space for Everyone
'CTRL+Play' offers free admission. It begins with a children's opening event on November 5th at 3 PM, and will then be open from 11 AM to 7 PM daily except Tuesdays. On Wednesdays, hours are extended until 9 PM.
Kunstthalle Praha is a non-profit contemporary art institution located in the Malá Strana district, just a few minutes' walk from Malostranská metro station. Supported by individual and corporate sponsors, it conducts exhibition programs as well as educational activities, collection management, and research and publishing projects.
Special Program for Children: 'Kidshalle'
This installation was planned as part of Kunsthalle's new program called 'Kidshalle'. Kidshalle is a play-centered space for both children and adults, aiming to stimulate creativity through interactive installations.
The Kunsthalle team stated: "Kidshalle extends our mission to open art to all generations and make creativity a natural part of everyday life." By reinterpreting the building's historical identity as a power substation through modern technology and art, they are providing visitors with new experiences.
The Meeting of Technology and Art
The idea of using 3D printers as musical instruments is gaining attention as an example of artistic appropriation of technology. This work, which reconfigures the sounds produced by printer motors and mechanical movements into musical elements, demonstrates that digital manufacturing technology can become a medium for creation beyond being a simple production tool.
Through this project, Kunsthalle Praha explores the intersection of art and technology, history and modernity, while presenting an experience-centered exhibition approach where visitors actively participate.
