  • Prykarpattia is a region possessing rich archaeological heritage spanning from the Neolithic period through the medieval era.

A Land Where Historical Treasures Sleep

The Prykarpattia region in western Ukraine holds rich archaeological heritage spanning from the Neolithic period to the Kyivan Rus era. Notable examples include Trypillian culture sites, temples and fortifications of ancient Halych (the capital of the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia), and the Stanislaviv Fortress and Potocki family estates from the 14th-17th centuries.

The Department of Culture, Nationalities and Religions of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast issued five archaeological excavation permits during 2024-2025. Permitted institutions include the Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies, the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and the State Archaeological Protection Service Company. The excavated artifacts are scheduled to be transferred to museum collections in Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv.

Potocki Palace Reveals Historical Layers

The core site of the 2024-2025 excavation survey was the Potocki Palace complex located at 5 Shpytalna Street in Ivano-Frankivsk city. The investigation was jointly conducted by the State Archaeological Protection Service Company and the research department of the municipal enterprise 'Palace Innovation Creative Space.'

The Potocki Palace was built between 1672-1682 by Polish Crown Field Hetman Andrii Potocki as a fortified residence. Originally a citadel equipped with moats, walls, and bastions, it served as the core of the Stanislaviv Fortress. French architects François Corassini and Carl Benoit are believed to have participated in its design.

The palace remained Potocki family property until 1802, then served as a military hospital for over two centuries after incorporation into the Austrian Empire. Designated a regional cultural heritage site in 1981, it functioned as a garrison hospital during the Soviet era and was neglected for a long period after Ukrainian independence.

After transfer to municipal ownership in 2017, it was reborn as a cultural space. In 2024, the interactive museum 'City and Arms' opened, and restoration work is underway to convert some buildings into conference centers through EU and UN support programs.

Significance of the Field Survey

Myroslava Korneliuk, acting director of the Department of Culture, Nationalities and Religions, stated that "no significant archaeological discoveries were reported during the survey period." However, excavation reports from the Potocki Palace site were submitted separately and are expected to provide important data for understanding the 17th-century fortress architecture and subsequent transformation processes.

Volodymyr Haidar, director of the municipal enterprise 'Palace Innovation Creative Space,' explained that "the excavation survey was conducted as part of the restoration project" and that "the purpose was to identify the original form of past structures and stratigraphic composition."

The Prykarpattia region will continue to be an important stage for archaeological research. Given the depth of its historical layers, systematic excavation and preservation must proceed in parallel to fully understand and protect the region's cultural heritage.
