Security Scandal Breaks on Election Eve

Nearly 800 Hungarian government email addresses and associated passwords are circulating in online breach databases, according to an investigation by open-source intelligence (OSINT) outlet Bellingcat. The analysis found that 12 of Hungary's 13 ministries have been affected, with some breaches exposing the credentials of military personnel and civil servants stationed abroad.

Among those affected are a senior military officer responsible for information security, a counterterrorism coordinator at the foreign affairs ministry, and an employee tasked with identifying hybrid threats against the country. The findings were published just before Hungarians headed to the polls to decide whether Prime Minister Viktor Orbán would win a fifth consecutive term. The government did not respond to requests for comment.

Password quality was equally alarming. Some employees used variations of the word 'Password' or simple number sequences like '1234567.' One employee caught in the 2012 LinkedIn breach used the password 'linkedinlinkedin.' A defense ministry staffer used their own surname. A foreign affairs employee's leaked password read 'embassy13hungary.'

The problem is not technical — it is cultural and institutional.

A Pattern Years in the Making

Hungary's IT security weaknesses are not new. In 2022, ahead of the previous Hungarian election, investigative outlet Direkt36 reported that Russian intelligence services had penetrated the foreign ministry's network, including its encrypted system for transmitting classified diplomatic documents. The ministry denied it at the time.

In 2024, news outlet 444 published an internal letter sent by Hungary's National Security Service to the foreign ministry six months before the hack was first reported publicly. The letter attributed the attacks to Russia and described more than 4,000 workstations and 930 servers as 'unreliable.' Russian cyberattacks, the report noted, had been ongoing for at least a decade.

This latest breach is not an isolated incident — it is another chapter in a long-running structural failure.
