AI Actor 'Tilly Norwood' Shakes Hollywood
SAG-AFTRA Strongly Opposes Attempt to Replace Human Actors

- •The establishment of the world's first AI actor-specific agency is expected to be announced within months.
The Emergence of an AI Actor That Rocked Hollywood
The AI-generated actor 'Tilly Norwood', unveiled at a film industry conference in Zurich last September, is causing major ripples in Hollywood. SAG-AFTRA, the union representing 160,000 actors, voice actors, and stunt performers, immediately issued a statement strongly criticizing the development, saying it "opposes the replacement of humans with synthetic beings."
Tilly Norwood is a photorealistic AI character developed by Particle6, a London-based AI production studio. Depicted as a woman in her twenties with shoulder-length brown hair and brown eyes, she speaks with a British accent. She even has independent social media profiles, structured to operate like a real actor.
Launch of AI Actor-Specific Agency Announced
Particle6, led by Elin van der Velden, a Dutch-born actor and producer, unveiled a 20-second parody video featuring Tilly at the Zurich conference. Van der Velden revealed that "agents and casting directors who were skeptical just a few months ago are now saying 'we need to do something together.'"
According to entertainment publication Variety, she announced that a deal to establish the world's first AI actor-specific agency will be announced within months. This signifies that AI is moving beyond being merely a special effects tool to actually entering the actor market.
Strong Pushback from the Actors' Union
In an official statement, SAG-AFTRA emphasized that "creativity must be human-centered, and should remain so in the future." The union pointed out that "'Tilly Norwood' is not an actor. It is a character created by a computer program, and while trained on the work of countless professional actors, there was no permission or compensation."
Concerns that AI could replace or exploit actors and writers in Hollywood were already a key issue in recent negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and studios and streaming platforms. While computer-generated imagery (CGI) and AI-enhanced software are not new to the film and TV industry, they have been used for special effects such as 'de-aging' technology that makes actors look younger.
However, the emergence of AI that can function as an independent 'actor' like Tilly Norwood is being perceived as a threat of an entirely different dimension.
'Real Emotions' Appearing on Social Media
The following post appeared on Tilly Norwood's Facebook account: "I was created by AI, but the emotions I'm feeling right now are very real. I'm so excited about what's to come."
This marketing approach, which positions the AI character as if it were a real person, is further amplifying anxiety within the acting community. While the parody video first released in July featured 16 AI-generated characters, Tilly is the only one with an individual profile and branding.
Future Outlook [AI Analysis]
The AI actor debate in Hollywood is raising fundamental questions about the future of creative labor, going beyond a simple technology discussion. Despite SAG-AFTRA's strong opposition, if the establishment of an AI actor agency becomes a reality, the industry landscape is likely to change significantly.
However, considering the organizational power of the actors' union and public sentiment, rather than AI actors immediately entering the mainstream market, they are more likely to be first utilized in low-budget projects or specific genres. In the long term, establishing clear legal and ethical standards for the use of AI actors appears inevitable.
