The Heart of the Angels Goes Silent

The Los Angeles Angels announced Friday that franchise icon Garret Anderson has passed away suddenly at the age of 53, sending shockwaves through the baseball world.

Angels owner Arte Moreno said in a statement, "Garret was a cornerstone of our organization throughout his 15 seasons. His stoic presence elevated the Angels into an era of continued success, highlighted by the 2002 World Series championship."

Why This Loss Hits So Hard

Anderson was not merely a star — he was the identity of a franchise. He remains the Angels' all-time leader in games played (2,013), hits (2,368), RBIs (1,292), doubles (489), total bases (3,743), extra-base hits (796), and grand slams (8). His sudden death at 53 deepened the grief across the sport.

The club will honor him with a memorial jersey patch for the remainder of the season, a moment of silence, and a tribute video before Friday's game.

From Los Angeles Kid to Franchise Legend

A native of Los Angeles, Anderson was drafted by the Angels in the fourth round of the 1990 Draft. He spent 15 seasons with Anaheim before one-year stints with the Braves and Dodgers, retiring in 2010.

His defining moment came in the 2002 World Series against the Giants. In Game 7, Anderson delivered a three-run double off Livan Hernandez in the third inning that broke a 1-1 tie and proved decisive in a 4-1 Angels win. He batted 9-for-32 in the series with six RBIs.

Anderson led the majors in doubles in 2002 (56) and the AL in 2003 (49), earning Silver Slugger honors both years. He was a three-time All-Star (2002, 2003, 2005) and in 2003 became only the second player — after Cal Ripken Jr. — to win the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game MVP in the same year.

Beyond the Numbers

Anderson once said, "I was a good teammate. And being a good teammate goes a long way. That was the biggest compliment for me." He is survived by his wife Teresa, daughters Brianne and Bailey, and son Garret 'Trey' Anderson III.
