Arctic sea ice extent reaches lowest record in satellite observation history
The lowest winter maximum since observations began in the late 1970s, and the lowest thickness ever.

Arctic sea ice records smallest winter peak in 46-year observational history
According to provisional data from the U.S. National Ice and Snow Data Center (NSIDC), this year's Arctic sea ice area reached its winter maximum of 14.29 million square kilometers on March 15. This is the lowest figure since satellite observations began in the late 1970s, and is statistically tied with the previous record set last year.
Dr Jack Rabe, of Climate Central, a climate research institute, called this winter a "very worrying" time for Arctic sea ice. What's even more serious is that sea ice thickness is near record lows, with Arctic sea ice "ending the winter in one of the most vulnerable conditions in the satellite record."
Why this is important
Winter sea ice maximum is a key indicator of the annual sea ice cycle. Sea ice repeats the cycle of growing during the cold winter and melting in the spring and summer, reaching an annual minimum. A decrease in winter maximum is likely to lead to a deepening of summer sea ice collapse.
Dr. Leti Roach of the Alfred Wegener Institute explained that over the past six months, Arctic sea ice extent has been at "record or near-record lows, with unusually warm temperatures observed across much of the region." He warned, “Warmer air and sea temperatures melt ice, and as ice shrinks, the ocean absorbs more heat, accelerating warming, creating a vicious cycle.”
In particular, Dr. Rabe pointed out that sea ice conditions in areas such as the Sea of Okhotsk, Baffin Bay, Barents Sea, and Kara Sea are "particularly serious."
Declining trend over half a century
This record is an extension of the long-term decline in Arctic sea ice that has continued since satellite observations began in the late 1970s. According to NSIDC, this year's maximum area is 1.36 million square kilometers smaller than the average from 1981 to 2010, which is about twice the area of the U.S. state of Texas.
"The annual maximum has been decreasing relatively steadily over the past 40 years, with the previous record low being set just last year," said Dr Mika Rantanen from the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Sea ice is rapidly decreasing not only in area but also in thickness. According to Dr. Rabe, the thickness of sea ice near the North Pole has been at an all-time low for several months, and the total sea ice volume in the Arctic in February was the second lowest on record.
Jet stream changes and abnormal temperature patterns
Dr Roach explained that a "strong temperature contrast" had recently been seen across the Northern Hemisphere. Unusually high temperatures were observed in the western United States, southern Europe, and eastern Eurasia, along with most of the Arctic region, while northern Eurasia, northern Canada, and the northeastern United States experienced unusual cold waves.
This has to do with the jet stream becoming more "wavy". The undulating jet stream pushes cold Arctic air south while simultaneously pulling warm air into the Arctic, promoting sea ice decline.
Future outlook [AI analysis]
Experts say this long-term downward trend is “largely due to human-induced climate change,” despite natural variability. “Human-induced climate change is completely reshaping polar environments, and this is already having far-reaching consequences,” Dr Rabe warned.
The continued decline in Arctic sea ice is likely to have global impacts, including rising sea levels, disturbance of polar ecosystems, and changes in Arctic shipping routes. In particular, sea ice thickness is at an all-time low, so the possibility of breaking the minimum record this summer cannot be ruled out.
