A Victory Overshadowed by Tension

Ejection and Bench-Clearing in the 8th

With two outs in the eighth inning and the Giants holding a three-run lead, Reds reliever Connor Phillips hit Willy Adames in the left leg with an 0-2 fastball. Adames removed his helmet and stared down Phillips before home-plate umpire Junior Valentine intervened. Giants players emerged from the dugout while Reds relievers gathered at the bullpen door. After conferring, the umpires ejected Phillips.

Phillips said he had tried to pitch inside twice and missed the second time. He referenced the previous night's tension involving Spencer Steer, suggesting the umpires may have acted quickly to prevent the game from escalating further.

The Night Before: Steer and Brubaker's Standoff

Tensions began Wednesday night in the seventh inning when Steer called a timeout at the last moment as Giants reliever JT Brubaker began his delivery. Brubaker responded by letting the pitch clock run nearly to zero before his next pitch, with Steer visibly urging him to throw.

Steer took a measured stance on the plunking: "I'm getting first base. I don't see a reason to retaliate. We're focused on winning baseball games."

Post-Game Confrontation

After the final out, pitcher Miller's emotional outburst toward the batter at the plate prompted Stewart to react sharply, triggering another bench-clearing incident. No punches were thrown.

Miller explained: "I was just fired up. The emotions got the best of me. Nothing personal — he just happened to be at the plate."

Manager Terry Francona, who returned to the field to help restore order, admitted he almost missed the incident entirely: "I usually put my head down and head back to the tunnel after a strikeout. I was on the late show."

The Giants won the series two games to one and head to Minnesota for Friday's game. Stewart kept it brief: "We won the series. We leave things on the field and move on."
