Blue House Advances AI Cooperation with AMD CEO

Ha Jeong-woo, Senior Presidential Secretary for AI Future Planning at the Blue House, will meet with AMD CEO Lisa Su on the morning of the 19th near Gwanghwamun to introduce the Korean government's 'AI Top 3' strategy. The meeting will also include Lim Moon-young, Vice Chairman of the National AI Strategy Committee, to discuss cooperation plans for the overall AI ecosystem.

AMD is a semiconductor design specialist that holds the second-largest market share in the global AI accelerator market after NVIDIA. Particularly strong in high-performance computing (HPC) and AI data centers, the company is attracting attention as a key partner for building Korea's AI infrastructure.

Consecutive Cooperation Discussions with Samsung Electronics and Naver

On the 18th, CEO Su met with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong to discuss signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) regarding high bandwidth memory (HBM) supply and AI infrastructure development. Samsung Electronics plans to expand its supply of HBM3E to be installed in AMD's AI accelerators and strengthen cooperation in next-generation product development.

In a subsequent meeting with Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon, they discussed ways to advance AI cloud services. Naver plans to introduce AMD's Instinct series GPUs to its data centers to enhance the computational performance of its generative AI service 'HyperCLOVA X.'

Technical Cooperation with Startup Upstage

A meeting with executives from AI startup Upstage is also scheduled for the 19th. The meeting with Upstage CEO Kim Sung-hoon will focus on introducing AMD Instinct MI355 GPUs and advancing the company's proprietary language model 'SOLAR.'

Upstage possesses unique technological capabilities in the efficient small language model (sLLM) field and expects to simultaneously improve inference speed and cost efficiency through AMD GPU adoption.

An additional meeting with Samsung Electronics Device Experience (DX) Division President Roh Tae-moon is also scheduled, where cooperation plans for implementing on-device AI in mobile devices and home appliances are expected to be discussed.

Commitment to Strengthening Korea's AI Ecosystem

A Blue House official stated, "We expect AMD's active participation and cooperation to secure Korea's global AI competitiveness and transform regional industries through AI." The government has set a goal to become one of the world's top three powers in AI semiconductors, AI data centers, and AI platforms through its 'AI Top 3' strategy.

Senior Secretary Ha will also explain the government's 'AI Highway' construction policy during this meeting. The AI Highway is a project that builds AI data centers at major locations nationwide and connects them through ultra-high-speed networks, supporting domestic companies and research institutions to easily access computing resources needed for AI development.

CEO Su's visit to Korea, her first since taking office, demonstrates AMD's strategic commitment to strengthening cooperation with Korea amid intensifying global AI competition. In particular, it appears that AMD recognizes cooperation with Korean memory semiconductor companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix as essential for expanding market share in the AI accelerator market currently dominated by NVIDIA.
